🎅 On the eighth day of Christmas, my 0-19 service gave to me ... 🎁
.. encouragement to get more active.

Kids need to be physically active for 60 minutes a day, with 30 minutes of that activity taking place outside of school. This should include 3 sessions a week of activity that strengthens muscles and bones, so mix it up!

Research shows that physical activity can help school-aged kids in lots of ways.
⚽ Improves behaviour, self-confidence and social skills
⚽ Improves attention levels and performance at school
⚽ Develops co-ordination
⚽ Strengthens muscles and bones
⚽ Improves health and fitness
⚽ Maintains healthy weight
⚽ Helps them sleep better
⚽ Improves mood and makes them feel good

On the seventh day of Christmas, my 0-19 service gave to me ...
.. ideas for videos and programmes that help my baby's development on TV.

Here are some tips which will help you to ensure that your little ones’ use of screens helps, rather than hinders their development.

Try not to leave a baby or toddler alone with a screen. They need interaction to develop so watch with them and talk about what they’re watching...

Try to limit the amount of screen time young children have - a few minutes at a time is enough for very young children.
Make sure the content is aimed directly at their age group. CBeebies programmes are designed for the very young and are created in close consultation with early years experts. For example the movements of the Twirlywoos reflect schemas – or the patterns of play which help children learn. The repetition of the programmes allows children to mimic the actions and offers an opportunity to respond.

Try not to have the TV on as “background noise”. It’s hard for children to filter different sounds out, so for them to develop good listening skills they need to be able to focus on whatever they’re listening to – i.e. you!

It’s a good idea to take the activities seen on the screen into the real world. You can use the songs and actions you’ve watched together and interpret them in the real world as part of your play together.

On the sixth day of Christmas, my 0-19 service gave to me ...
.. suggestions of how to include five a day in our family's tea

At a glance: what counts?
80g of fresh, canned or frozen fruit and vegetables counts as 1 portion of your 5 A Day. Opt for tinned or canned fruit and vegetables in natural juice or water, with no added sugar or salt.
30g of dried fruit (this is equivalent to around 80g of fresh fruit) counts as 1 portion of your 5 A Day. Dried fruit should be eaten at mealtimes, not as a between-meal snack, to reduce the risk of tooth decay.

Some portions only count once in a day:
150ml of fruit juice, vegetable juice or smoothie. Limit the amount you drink to a combined total of 150ml a day. Crushing fruit and vegetables into juice and smoothies releases the sugars they contain, which can damage teeth. Juices and smoothies should be consumed at mealtimes, not as a between-meal snack, to reduce the risk of tooth decay.
80g of beans and pulses. These only count once as part of your 5 A Day, no matter how many you eat. This is because although they're a good source of fibre, they contain fewer nutrients than other fruits and vegetables.

On the fifth day of Christmas, my 0-19 service gave to me ...
.. support with introducing solid food to my baby.

From 12 months, if your child is no longer having formula milk, they should be taking vitamin drops every day. Talk to your Health Visiting team about vitamins for your child.

It’s a good idea to introduce your child to a wide range of healthy foods early. This will not only help your child to grow and develop, but also help them to develop good eating habits which they hopefully continue throughout their life.

A healthy balanced diet is made up of four main food groups:
Starch – such as bread, rice, pasta, cereal and potatoes
Fruits and vegetables – these could be fresh, dried, canned or in juice form
Dairy – for example, cheese, yoghurt and milk
Protein – includes meat, fish, eggs or pulses (for example beans or lentils)

Of course, some children may need more encouragement than others and not all children will like everything. Don’t give up if your child doesn’t like a vegetable the first time, it’s worth trying again and maybe serving it in a different way or with something else.

Below are some tips to encourage healthy eating:
Try to avoid feeding your child oversized portions
Don’t make your child finish everything on the plate or eat more than they want to
Try having a set mealtime where you sit together as a family. Turn off the TV or the tablet and use it as a time to talk to one another
Limit sugary foods and offer healthy snacks such as fruit or raw vegetables
Offer them a cup of water with their meal

.. signposting to the correct NHS service when my child is unwell.

NHS 111 is here if you need non-emergency, urgent care. Calling 111 is an easy and quick way to get the right advice or treatment you need for you and your family’s health.

It’s free to call from a landline or mobile phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

You can also use NHS 111 online to find out:
where to get help for your symptoms, if you're not sure what to do
how to find general health information and advice
where to get an emergency supply of your prescribed medicine
how to get a repeat prescription

Remember to call 999 in an emergency.

If your child needs urgent medical attention, in the first instance call either your GP or NHS 111 and you will be directed to the most appropriate service for your need.

Depending on your child's condition, you could be directed to an appointment at Wolverhampton’s Urgent Treatment Centre, receive a home visit from an out of hours GP or another NHS service.

Examples of when your child might need urgent care include sprains and strains, cuts and grazes, minor scalds and burns.

In Wolverhampton, there are two Urgent Treatment Centres which provide on-the-spot treatment and advice for minor injuries, minor illnesses and ailments.

The 24-hour Urgent Treatment Centre is based on the ground floor of the Emergency and Urgent Care Centre at New Cross Hospital.

If your child or any member of your family has a serious injury, sudden severe illness or if it’s a medical emergency, call 999 for an ambulance or take them to your nearest 24-hour Emergency Department (A&E).

On the third day of Christmas, my 0-19 service gave to me ...
.. tips and advice for my child's dental health.

It’s important to register your child with a dental practice and get them used to visiting so they understand what to expect. Your dentist will advise you on how often they need to go. NHS dental treatment is free for children.

It’s important to start good dental habits early to help prevent tooth decay later. Limit sugary treats and drinks, don’t add sugar to food or drink and choose sugar free medicines.

Your child should now be brushing their teeth twice a day – morning and night. It’s good to encourage them to do it themselves but you should supervise them in the early years to help make sure they are doing it correctly.
