Look, I get it.

Losing weight is a funny old thing.

The concept of calories in vs calories out makes sense and seems very simple, but unfortunately life doesn’t seem to let it work that way.

To lose body fat you need to eat less calories than your body is using.

Simple, right?

Sure, but what about when you throw in the fact you’re a sodding human being with life stuff to contend with?!

You have a crap day at work and you forgot your lunch alongside a terrible nights sleep the night previous.

The last thing you want to think about is getting your gym clothes on and prep your chicken and sweet potato salad.

Now I’ve been a Personal Trainer for over 9 years now and in that time the main thing I’ve learned about people being successful with a fat loss goal, or any fitness related goal for that matter, is that the most important thing is the overall plan needs to fit specifically for that person, their life and personality.

It would be no good me telling someone to go train at 5am when they work until midnight every night.

It would be no good me telling someone to eat chicken and rice 3 times a day when they can’t stand the sight of it in the first place.

It would be no good me telling someone they need to train for 2 hours a day, 6 days a week when they work a 9-5 office job and have 3 kids at home.

The plan would look great on paper, but the reality is it would not work in the slightest.

It has to work FOR YOU AND YOU ALONE.

That’s why my 1-2-1 coaching programme is completely tailored to each individual.

Right you, listen up.

There’s something we need to get straight.

We need to talk about what it actually takes to get your DREAM BODY.

You know that one where you’ve got cool looking muscles, are as strong as hell and have definition so good you could teach GCSE biology off your anatomy.

Now where most people go wrong with achieving such a cool looking physique is they focus too much, or soley, on one thing.

Losing weight.

*Audible gasp*

Yeah that’s right I said it.

People put too much emphasis on fat loss.

Now don’t get me wrong, if you’ve got a fair amount of body fat to lose then absolutely that should be your first priority

But that’s not the secret to getting that strong, athletic, jaw dropping body you’re after.

To do that you’re going to have to put the time and effort into build some serious muscles.

And in my training life there are times where I’ve argued that building new muscles that you’ve never built before is harder than fat loss because of how you need to push yourself with your training.

The thing is, it’s building these muscles that will properly shape your physique.

It’s what will make you look strong and badass.

The fat loss just reveals your hard earned muscles.

But you have to earn those muscles first.

Want to get stronger than you’ve ever been?

More musclar than you’ve ever been?

More athletic than you’ve ever been?

Well that was exactly what my online client Gurm wanted to do when he approached me for coaching.

Gurm had previously been training with another coach, but felt like he needed a freshen up and a change so he was no stranger to the gym and training as a whole.

But what he struggling with was lack of progress.

He was pushing himself in the gym, but just wasn’t getting anywhere.

So we set about to change that in a big way.

Gurm is vegetarian, but that wasn’t a problem when looking at how to increase his calories to get him eating enough food consistently to build muscle and strength as the trick was to find good protein sources that he likes the taste of and can make tasty meals around.

So alongside that we had to create a training programme that meant he was able to build muscle and strength while adding in cool and fun athletic exercises to been him feeling sharp and nimble.

Add all that alongside our weekly check ins where we addressed any changes that needed to be made and he’s gained a ton of muscle, increased all his measurements and got hella athletic!

Safe to say operation beast mode is well underway!

I’m going to be honest here.

I might not be the right coach for you.

I’m being serious here.

Okay hear me out.

I’m a big believer that you shouldn’t put too much faith in someone who is ‘A jack of all trades, master of none’.

Believe me I actually paid one of those once to do work on my house and the results were abysmal.

And to that end, if you’re looking for help with your fitness goals you should only work with a coach you is a real authority in the area that applies to you.

Now obviously since I’ve been doing this for over 9 years and for 6 of those have been teaching people to become PTs too I CAN work with pretty much everyone, but there is a certain type of person who I work BEST with.

These are the type of people who tend to get the best results with me.

These are the type of people who have dabbled with the gym before, but don’t really have much of a clue what they should be doing for the best.

These are the type of people who understand that eating healthy should be a part of our daily lives, but also you don’t need to turn down a good meal out with your partner/friends/family.

These are the type of people that know that doing things the RIGHT WAY is 100% better than any quick fix scheme can offer in the long term.

These are the type who want to become strong, lean, fit and happy with how they look and feel.

A monumental 51kg total weight lost.

That is a life changing amount of weight.

And the way she did it wasn’t crazy. It wasn’t some insane training regime. It wasn’t a diet that had her eating eggs and kale 3 times a day.

Two weights workouts and 3 long treadmill walks a week (Treadmill because she has to get it in early before work).

Keeping track of calories and allowing for meals out with friends and family (Which she does A LOT).

Being disciplined and saying no to snacks and treats when she know it’s not a good idea.

And doing that consistently over a long period of time.

And it did help that she had me there to teach her all this and to motivation/pick her up/give her kick when she needed it.

And she’s now in a position where people are asking her how she did it and they find her inspirational that she can do the same.

Let’s be honest, whether you’re a gentlemen, a lady or something inbetween, having muscles and looking strong is one of the coolest looks you can have.

No one messes with someone with some visible gunshow action.

My favourite memory of someone making a comment to me was when I was going through security to board a cruise ship and the guard said to me that I was going to have to stand to one side so they could check my guns in before boarding (Proudest moment of my life at the time).

Now it’s fair to say that a lot of people struggle to actually see any visible results when trying to build muscle (It’s what a lot of my clients have come to me for over the years) so to save you the same trouble I’ve listed down my all time key tips for build muscle and becoming even more of a legend than you already are:

1) Your training has to be designed to push your limits and FORCE you to grow.

We build muscle by the body being put under new stress/stimulus which means is HAS to grow to cope with what it’s just been put through. Your training needs to allow for this.

2) You NEED to eat enough to gain muscle.

If I had a pound for everytime I said to someone that muscle tissue doesn’t magically appear out of thin air I wouldn’t need to be writing this because I’d have retired a long time ago. New muscle gets developed from the excess calories we put into our bodies. And no you can’t ‘covert’ bodyfat into muscle.

3) You will need to ADAPT to stop your progress from stagnating.

Whether that be more calories or a change in your training, things will absolutely have to change as time goes on otherwise your progress will slow down or even stop.

Back in the day I was a little runt of a thing.

I liked messing around with weights (I robbed my Dad’s dumbbells off him and would do biceps curls and sit ups in my bedroom and I thought they were the only things that would get you jacked)

But never really made much progress until I was 21 and actually had researched how to gain muscle and get stronger.

I made a lot of mistakes, but learned a lot of things too along the way.

But I’m actually really grateful that I got so much wrong in the first few years of my training as it means I’m in a much better position to help other people who want to follow the same journey that I did.

I’ve been toying for a while now with the direction that I’d like ACM Fit to go in and while my decision isn’t all that drastic a change, it does help give me a lot more clarity as to where I want to take the business.

So, based off my own journey, my knowledge and the type of people my current client base tends to be, here is how the future of ACM Fit will look:

Through my renowed 1-2-1 coaching programme I want to help regular, hardworking people get stronger, leaner and fitter than they’ve ever been before.

Imagine being able to Squat or Bench Press more than ever while also doing cool things like completing your first 5k and becoming more athletic.

While at the same time looking musclar, yet lean. Not a big ass bodybuilder, just good all-round fit and strong.

Oh and it helps that you are open to having a laugh along the way too.
