▪️A Gummy Smile, also known as excessive gingival display, occurs when a person smiles and an excessive amount of gum tissue shows above the upper teeth. This condition can be caused by several factors, including:
▪️1. Hyperactive Upper Lip Muscles (Commonest / Easiest to treat): The muscles controlling the upper lip may be overactive, pulling the lip higher than normal when smiling.
▪️2. Less Common: Gum Hypertrophy, Short Upper Lip, Tooth Eruption Issues, Jaw Development Issues.
▪️Treatment Options
Several treatments are available to address a gummy smile, depending on the underlying cause:
▪️1. Botulinum Toxin Injections: Tiny amounts of the toxin can be injected into the upper lip muscles to reduce their activity and limit how high the lip moves when smiling. Quick & virtually painless, this will show results within a week or two.
▪️2. Other options, based on findings - Orthodontic Treatment (Braces), Laser Gum Contouring, Crown Lengthening Surgery, Jaw Surgery, Lip Repositioning Surgery
▪️Consulting with a dental or medical professional is important to determine the most appropriate treatment based on the specific cause of the gummy smile. Toxin injections won’t work for everyone and can make matters worse if done by an inexperienced practitioner.
▪️Stay safe!
Don’t know if your injector is a real prescriber? Ask them what else they’re also licensed to “prescribe”. Are they able to issue prescriptions to any pharmacy, for other items as needed, such as antibiotics. Or are their prescription toxins arriving by mail with no actual Doctor or nurse prescriber involved - illegally.
love to hear about such shady things and let’s make this area safer.
