👁️🍒 Cherry Eye Repocketing – What It Is & How We Treat It

Cherry eye occurs when a dog’s third eyelid gland pops out of place, creating that red “cherry-like” swelling in the corner of the eye. While it’s not usually painful at first, it does need treatment to protect the eye and keep tear production normal.

One of the most effective treatments is cherry eye repocketing surgery.

✨ What is repocketing?
Repocketing is a surgical technique where we create a small pocket in the third eyelid and gently tuck the gland back into its normal position, then secure it so it stays in place.

✨ Why we don’t remove the gland:
The third eyelid gland produces up to 30–50% of a dog’s tears. Removing it can lead to chronic dry eye (KCS), discomfort, infections and lifelong treatment — which is why modern vets focus on preserving the gland.

✨ Benefits of repocketing
• Restores the gland to its natural position
• Helps maintain healthy tear production
• Reduces long-term complications
• Often offers excellent cosmetic and functional results
