Penn Podiatry on tour!

Spent a super morning keeping the work force on their feet with on onsite pop up clinic!
Great to see a company looking after their staff.

It’s the first time back after the pandemic and lovely to see some familiar faces.

Always looking at being the best podiatrist I can be for my amazing patients.

It’s all about anatomy anatomy anatomy... so I attended a fantastic and challenging cadaver dissection day at Nottingham city hospital, run by 4 incredible podiatric surgeons.

When you see a verruca on your child, your heart sinks.

What will people think?

What do I do about it?

Am I a bad parent?

It happens to us all and it’s more common that you think.

(You’re not a bad parent BTW)

Verrucas are a virus.

Part of the Human Papiloma Virus (HPV) Family.

And what the virus does is “gets into” a host cell and then does some viral-magic to survive.

The virus then hides and produces chemicals to keep it out of the immune systems watchful
eye.

Any treatment that we use, has to show the virus to the immune system and say “look, it’s here”.

Then it could do it’s magic.

But, and it’s a big but, no treatment is 100% effective.

(And it someone tells you they have one that is, then call them out, because they are lying)

So what can we do?

Well, there’s a lot but probably the simplest four are:

1. Time (AKA leave them alone)

2. Tape - softens the verruca and makes it more comfy so that number 1 can kick in.

3. Needling - create a cell mediated response to give the immune system a wake up call.

4. Microwave therapy - heat creates a cell medicate immune response and gives the immune system a wake up call.

If the verruca causes no issue, then 1 and 2 are ideal. If you are getting painful symptoms then 3 and 4 are useful.

Ultimately it’s about treating you as an individual.

You get up in the morning.

Your heel hurts.

You can’t put it to the ground.

Each.

Step.

Is.

Agony.

Dr Google tells you that you have plantar fasisomething.

(Don’t worry, we all have trouble with some of these medical words)

It’s been going on a while now, despite the ice and the stretches and the diet to “reduce inflammation”.

And you are really getting worried.

How will I run after my kids?

How will I exercise?

How will I work?

Your mind goes and plays a game of mental chess.

But there is another way.

With over 40 types of heel pain, it’s possible that your plantar fasciitis is actually something else.

That’s why the stuff you’ve been doing just ain’t working.

The key is to get a good assessment from someone that really knows heel pain.

Someone that can tell the difference between trauma, nerve problems and the many other causes of heel pain.
