We had a wonderful Friday at our George Street office with everyone coming together thanks to volunteers Kiran & her mom, Sukhwant, who prepared lunch for all as part of Sikh Diwali celebrations.
Offering food is a form of seva (selfless service) that teaches equality and compassion. Free food is served to everyone, regardless of background and during Diwali celebrations the langar is abundant (they had a new delicious menu!) symbolising generosity and equality.
Much like our recovery journeys show, it’s about freedom, resilience, and justice. Diwali for Sikhs is a Day of Liberation (Bandi Chhor Divas) and remembers Guru Hargobind Ji, who was released from imprisonment in 1619 along with 52 Hindu princes he refused to leave behind. For Sikhs, Diwali is about freedom from oppression, standing by others even at personal cost (as Guru Hargobind Ji did), the power of spiritual light over political darkness, Seva (selfless service) and unity Diwali is a celebration of liberation, courage, and moral leadership.
Thanks again to Kiran, Sukhwant, and our team of dedicated volunteers. It was a wonderful vibe.
