With the third heatwave of the year sweeping across the country, you may be tempted to get out over the weekend and exercise. But did you know high temperatures significantly increase the risk of sports-related injuries?

Hot weather can lead to muscle fatigue, making them less able to absorb shock and stabilise joints, thus increasing the likelihood of strains, sprains, and stress fractures. Furthermore, heat can exacerbate existing injuries by increasing inflammation and pain.

To prevent injuries whilst training in this glorious weather, make sure you stay hydrated and even consider electrolyte drinks, especially during prolonged exercise in the heat; take frequent breaks in shaded areas to allow the body to cool down; listen to your body and pay attention to signs of overheating, such as dizziness, nausea, or excessive fatigue. If these symptoms occur, stop exercising and seek medical attention; consider modifying training sessions by reducing intensity or duration, or opting for indoor activities while temperatures are extreme.

If you do suffer an injury, NJB Physiotherapy in Codsall is here to help! Contact us on 01902 844030, or visit the website at www.njbclinic.co.uk to find out more.

As the weather warms up, so does the water which can only mean one thing… open water swimming!

Maybe you’re a regular swimmer who trains often or perhaps you’ve entered a triathlon and have suddenly started swimming again… either way, hard training in the water can wreak havoc on the shoulders!

At the clinic, we see a lot of rotator cuff injuries which are common among swimmers due to the repetitive nature of swimming motions, which can strain the muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. These injuries, often referred to as "swimmer's shoulder," can manifest as impingement, tendinitis, or even tears of the rotator cuff tendons.

Proper warm-ups, pain relief meds, and ice/heat treatments can all help ease the discomfort, but this injury often doesn’t disappear on its own. If you’re struggling with shoulder pain, pop in to see us at NJB Physio, drop us an email, or give us a call on 01902844030 and see how our experts can help!

If you’re a triathlete then the summer is your time to shine with June, July and August being awash with events taking place all over the Midlands. Just a few of our favourites include Ultimate Triathlon Alderford Lake, UK Triathlon, Birmingham Triathlon, Triathlon England West Midlands, and Blithfield Triathlon.

You’ll have obviously ramped up your training in order to get fighting fit for race day, but over-training comes with its own risks, such as injuries, sprains and strains to tendons and muscles in the legs, groin, back and shoulders.

If you’re experiencing any twinges or pain in these areas, address it sooner rather than later to give yourself time to recover and train leading up to your event.

At NJB, we are experts in all musculoskeletal complaints, and offer mobilisations, manipulations, muscle re-education and rehabilitation.

Back pain, particularly lower back pain (LBP), is a very common complaint and, whilst it usually improves within a few weeks, it can often last longer or can reoccur for no specific reason.

LBP complaints are usually caused from muscle/ligament strain, facet joint or even a disc prolapse, and other medical conditions.
The above are some of the most common injuries we see here at NJB, often caused by improper lifting, sports injuries, poor posture, or even lack of exercise.

At NJB Physiotherapy, we are experts in all musculoskeletal complaints, and offer assessment, advise and diagnosis, followed up by a combination of treatments, such as mobilisations, manipulations, muscle re-education and rehabilitation.

Our professional team who are all HCPC registered and have years of experience are happy to assist, advise and educate to ensure all of our patients receive the best possible care for their back issues.

If you’re after advice, a diagnosis, or treatments for LBP, don’t hesitate to contact us on 01902844030 or visit the website at www.njbclinic.co.uk.
