It’s great to see that this year’s focus is on a pressing workplace issue—burnout.

A growing body of research shows that workplace stress and burnout have been on the rise. I often hear from people feeling overwhelmed and chronically stressed by their perpetually fast-paced work environments, compounded by personal stressors.

As a result, individuals—whether leaders or part of the wider workforce—can slip into burnout, sometimes before they even realise it.

Many of us would seek immediate help for a physical injury like a broken arm, yet mental health challenges can go often go unacknowledged or unaddressed. However, the human personal, professional, and organisational impacts are significant.

Today offers an excellent opportunity to collectively discuss, identify, and take actionable steps to alleviate workplace stress and burnout, now and for the future.

Among the issues people describe to me are challenging workplace relationships, including abuse from leaders.

Recent research from Ohio State University suggests that employees who experience abusive behaviour from successful and high-performing leaders are more likely to give the leader a pass and label the behaviour as something positive. For example, employees are more likely to label abusive behaviours such as calling their thoughts and feelings ‘stupid’ or ridiculing them as ‘tough love’.

The research also highlighted that employees were less likely to express displeasure or retaliate against high-performing abusive bosses, giving them a pass partly because they expected something good would come out of a bad situation. This says a lot about a leader's power and why employees may be less likely to speak up about inappropriate behaviour in the leader-employee relationship.

Abusive leadership can have a major impact on employee mental health and well-being, including demoralisation, stress, anxiety, burnout, low mood, and depression.

Thankfully, there’s good news—empathy and respect from leaders can make a world of difference. By promoting a culture of mutual respect and open communication, leaders can create a supportive environment where everyone feels safe and valued.
