Remembering Willie Johnson

Willie Johnson was a violinist and the secretary of the Ibbotson String Band, who sadly passed away on 22nd April 1903, aged 33. He was the son of Arthur Johnson, building contractor, and was employed as a clerk at Clarkson's Brewery. When Willie Johnson died, his band mates purchased him a brilliant white stone violin for the family grave.

PSA: HELP THE BIRDS!

The RSPB have issued new bird feeding guidance to protect birds from a highly contagious disease called trichomonosis. Please don't feed the birds in the cemetery from 1st May to 31st October. If food is left, even for other wildlife, ensure it's left safely and:

🐦Not left on flat surfaces (i.e. tree stumps) where old food can collect or get damp.
🐦Not at the base of trees where bird droppings can collect.
🐦Left somewhere different each time to prevent contaminated debris build-up, or lots of birds gathering at once.

Remembering Roy Kilner

Yorkshire & England Cricketer, born 17th October 1890, died 5th April 1928. Throughout Kilner's life, he played for Mitchell Main Colliery's cricket team at an early age, then Yorkshire County Cricket Club, and played nine test matches for England. He also served in the First World War.
