** Skipping Breakfast May Increase chances of Depression, Anxiety and Stress **
Mental Health: What Does the Science Say?
(short answer at the bottom of this post)
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis (published in Nutritional Neuroscience) looked at 14 observational studies involving nearly 400,000 people (ages 6 to 65+).
Key findings: People who skip breakfast had higher odds of:
- Depression (39% higher)
- Stress (23% higher)
- Psychological distress (55% higher)
- In adolescents, skipping breakfast was also linked to higher anxiety (51% higher odds).
Important: This study shows a strong correlation (association), not causation. It doesn’t prove that skipping breakfast causes poorer mental health. It could be that people with worse mental health are more likely to skip breakfast, or other lifestyle factors may play a role.
However, A follow-up 2024 genetics study (Nutrition Journal) using data from ~194,000 people went further with Mendelian randomization and found evidence suggesting causation in one direction: skipping breakfast may causally raise the risk of major depressive disorder by about 36%. No strong evidence that depression causes skipping breakfast.
** Short Answer **
Looking at both studies in combination, it might be prudent to NOT skip that breakfast if you are prone to depression, under stress or suffer from anxiety.
And yes, there will be people who thrive skipping breakfast. However, if you aren't thriving, and you're skipping breakfast, it might be time to re-evaluate.
