This is me breafeeding my first born when he was a few days old (he is 8 now🥹) with his small tiny hand wrapped around my thumb.
I remember being overwhelmed with an unfamiliar feeling of love.

As birthworkers, I know that we go on about the importance of birth preparation, knowing your rights
and being able to make informed decisions.

However, ultimately, the greatest and life changing moment is when you meet your baby and
at that moment, everything slows down, and time seems to stop as the emotions take over.

Some cry, some stare in disbelief - This is love, love like no other

Doulas support Dads and partners too.

As a Doula I do not only provide support to the birthing person but also to their partner.

Doulas are not there to replace the primary birth partner ( when there is one). A doula provides support to the family unit. The role of the birth partner and doula should complement each other.

Other benefits of a doula to the primary birthing partner:

- Help to build confidence in birth process

- Practical support

- Provide relief to enable birth partner to experience childbirth with the birthing person to the fullest

- Additional post partum support

Had to share this post by my wonderful doula sister Doula Grace Hall]
What is normal and what commonly happen are two very different things.

and Doula Grace Hall] - The Birthing Tree.

✊🏿On the last day of the Black Maternal Health awareness week I would like to uplift all Black and Brown birth workers and recognise your importance for the birthing experience of families.

🤰🏾Despite of medicalisation of birth, a major aspect of the parenting journey, is the need for respect, advocacy and humanisation of labour (birthing individuals are not just one more statistic - they are humans with memories, physical and emotional feelings).

♥️Black birth workers bring ritualisation and support embedded with ancestral traditions adapted to contemporary living to the parenting journey of ALL families.

🤰🏾We are experienced mothers, we are daughters, sisters and educated women in our communities. We are in the frontline for humanised and respectful maternal health.

♥️Birth and postpartum are normal events that are around us everyday since we were young, as a rite of passage deserving protection, nurture, celebration and habilitation for this special new role of welcoming and raising new humans in their families and world.

🤰🏾I would so much like to thank all black and brown birth workers since the legacy of that is rooted in dignifying labour, birth, lactation and counselling families during their journeys.

♥️Together, we can make a positive change to birthing experiences. Together, we can be the change.

You can and will birth well.

☎️Doula On-call

I'm officially on call now for my April Mama and I'm going to roughly be on call up till mid July, with a birth client each month.

So what does it mean to be on-call?

🗓My on-call period starts from 10 days before the estimated due date until when baby is born.

🏃🏿‍♀️To be on-call means to be available 24/7 and ready to leave to support at a birth at any moment.

🔊My phone charged, always on and volume up.

👜My on- call bag is packed.

🚫I don't travel more than 1-1.5hrs away from my client.

I have made adequate childcare. arrangements (Thank you to my Hubby, sisters, in-laws and parents)

Being on-call is indeed a commitment but I wouldn't have it any other way. This gives parents the security they need to ensure when the time comes I will be ready and there to support come night or day

It's at times one of the hardest words to say but it's your right.

You have autonomy and if any care providers tells you "You are allowed" 🚩🚩🚩🚩

Rather they should respect that you are fully capable of making informed decisions be it outside of guidance or not.

It's your body, your choice!

The question is why?? Let that sink in!

A REFLECTIVE POST

Time flies, I'm due to upgrade my phone....I just may be leaving team Android for an Apple. So I was looking through old pictures.

I remember taking this as I wanted to capture just how tiny my then 2 week year old daughter was. It made me pause and reflect this morning.

See the newborn phase and literally the first year is such an adjustment and at times it seems during the depths of sleep deprivation that there is no end to it. This is encouragement to say, its OK to dread the endless ground hog day receptiveness and you will get through it. Having a baby is a lot, the warm cuddles and seeing your little one grow each day brings so much joy but it is hard.

This picture mainly reminds me that the days are indeed long but the years fly by🥹

My eldest is turn 8 next month and I really can't believe it....like soon he will be off to secondary school🥴 ...So I really need to get all those cuddles in before he begins to think its embarrassing!

Ignorance is bliss is absolutely the wrong mindset to have when it comes to childbirth.

"Being in a state of ignorance deprives your chance of taking any actions that could ultimately produce the results that you have always wanted. In other words, ignorance holds you back from what you want to achieve by limiting your belief"

As it comes closer to the time to birth your child it is important to be equipped with the full artillery to navigate your way round the maternity system. So as well as preparing the baby wish list/ nursery and etc, take time to really do your homework.

📚Do your research - These days information is readily available so there is little excuse to not put in the effort and do your own research. Of course it can be overwhelming, this is where having a doula and/or enrolling on a hypnobirthing course can help to pinpoint reputable and evidence sources as well as providing an opportunity to discuss Be prepared, learn about the different options available, benefits and understand the absolute risk.

⚖Know your rights - This is a good starting point I have found that many walk into childbirth blind without a clue of what their individual rights are has highly informative factsheets that you can access for free. Being aware of what your individual rights are will empower you give you courage and confidence if the need arises and you need to question/challenge anything regarding your birth choices.

🤰🏾Listen to your body- We need to relearn this we have grown up in a time where childbirth is so medicalised that we are not aware of how powerful and intelligent or bodies are. Learn to trust and understand the innate physiology of your body and how it works to enable your baby to be born.

🧘🏾‍♀️Trust to your instincts - If something just doesn't feel right don't ignore it. The saying "go with your gut" is not random. Tuning into yourself involves your emotions, body as well as your gut. We are so used to using our head and logic bit not everything experienced can be understood or processed through head knowledge.

🗣Speak up. This is your body, your baby, your choice. You have autonomy!

So it's been over a year since I did an intro post. Firstly to all my new followers welcome to my page🤗

👋🏾 I'm Yvonne, I'm a 30-somethin, married mother of 3 : 1 boy and 2 girls.

I live in Woodford Green, I'm originally from Nigeria 🇳🇬🇬🇧(my parents moved to London when I was 2). I'm the oldest of 5 girls.

I worked for over 10years as a clinical hospital/GP Pharmacist a.k.a Legal drug dealer. Joke aside my work as a pharmacist was mainly involved with the safe and appropriate use of medicines.

I am also the MVP Chair (since May 2022) for Waltham Forest.

I'm an intuitive empath, love travelling ( preferably without my 3 kids🙆🏾‍♀️, our summer holiday to Portugal made me realise this more)

Why am I so passionate about birth work? ➡️

1.) I am in wonder with the human body and the physiology of birth

2.) It's important for women and birthing people to improve their knowledge, change their negative subconscious beliefs and build their confidence when it comes to birth and postpartum

3.) As a black woman - representation really matters!

So tell me what brings you here ⏬️
