Function Chiropractic and Physiotherapy Clinic

Function Chiropractic and Physiotherapy Clinic Chiropractic is a safe, effective and evidence-based form of healthcare.

We are expertly trained in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromusculoskeletal conditions - this is nerves, muscles, joints and spine. Using a combination of techniques it is proven to help with headaches, migraines, disc issues, sprained ankles, sciatica and everything in between. And if manual therapy isn't the best option for you, then I can at least point you in the right direction. The focus

is always on the cause and correcting it from the roots up, rather than just brushing over the worst of it, or covering up your symptoms with medications. There are many techniques to use on various conditions, the most common types of treatment include:
-Chiropractic adjustments
-Activator therapy
-Dry needling
-Soft tissue release/massage therapy
-Functional training (rehab/stretches/exercises)

"What am i going to do" questions coming in thick and fast!

A. You'll be fine, the team are wonderful and youre in safe hands!
B. Most people will aim to keep consistent care schedules with the other chiros, some people might get more massage, see how we go!

Im rising 21 weeks so weve still got time BUT the loose plan:

✨️ August will be size and pelvis and health dependent, but i am doing *everything* in my power to reduce likelihoods of a rough third trimester 😅
✨️ Sep ill be tired/recovering
✨️ Oct as above
✨️ From Nov/Dec I'll be filtering back in
✨️ Be a while before im full time back with patients
❌️ No new patients this year (sorry guys!)

I say loose becomes ultimately she might throw a spanner in the works, and best laid plans and all that!

By June time I should know a bit more certain plans but in the meantime 💁‍♀️

Spicy hip syndrome 🌶

This used to be called trochanteric bursitis or tendinitis, but its usually a bit of both so its now GTPS.

Tendinitis is inflammation of the tendons in that area (glute med, min, tensor fascia lata).

Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, fluid pockets between tendons that protect our bony bits. Theres no 'sac' as they dont have a lining,

Pain is over the outer aspect of the hip worse with walking, sitting for prolonged periods, and/or laying on it depending where most of your inflammation is.

We diagnose through:
✅️ Detailed case history
✅️ Assessment of the area
✅️ Assessment of associated joints
❌️ Scans not usually necessary

Risk factors: hypermobility, dysplasia, sitting for long periods, lower back issues, menopause, linear exercise

Treatment is to address leg and low back influences, relax associated muscles and then progressively load them so they get more resilient and bulletproof 💥

We dont tend to do scans straight away as its a pretty common and straightforward issue, and the scan doesnt change any treatment plan. We might consider a scan if it presents as secondary GTPS and we need to further investigate underlying triggers.

Differentials: Gluteal nerve irritation, underlying dysplasia, meralgia parasthetica

The most common question I get with patients:
✅️ Over 25 years old
✅️ Pain somewhere around the hip

No panic or new hips needed though!
Its very rare that its arthritis, but most people do immediately think "oh no".

Hip *joint* will give groin pain but its a complex area with lots of criss crossing tissues so theres lots of issues that can come up, very rarely is it arthritis...

💃The more common conditions:

Outside of hip:
⚡️ GTPS - Greater trochanteric syndrome (new name for bursitis/tendinitis) ...🥇🥇🥇🥇 most common by a long way (more on slide 3 above...)
⚡️Referred pain from low back
⚡️ Meralgia parasthetica (lateral cutaneous nerve entrapment)
⚡️Hip dysplasia muscle compensation (less likely but leads to gtps so always assess gtps for dysplasia)
⚡️Calcific tendinitis (unlikely)

Back of hip:
⚡️Sacro iliac joints
⚡️Sciatic pain/piriformis syndrome
⚡️Joint effusion (fluid in the joint)

Front of hip/groin:
⚡️Femoral nerve entrapments
⚡️Hip flexor/quad attachment strain
⚡️Referred pain from lower abdomen
⚡️Labrum (cartilage) issues (tears, cysts)
⚡️Impingement syndrome
⚡️Inguinal hernia
⚡️Hip dysplasia
⚡️Joint effusion

Rare hip joint issues:
⚡️Stress fractures
⚡️Avascular necrosis
⚡️Pagets disease
⚡️Perthes disease

Its very rare we refer for imaging, but if needed then xray will show arthritis and MRI shows all the connective tissues, cartilage, fluid and more.

Sciatica ⚡️

Sciatica has a huge variation in symptoms as its a non specific term for 'irritation of sciatic nerve'.

If someone diagnoses 'sciatica' but not where its coming from then run 🏃‍♀️

If you have pain down the front of your leg, or goes up into your back and been told its sciatica, run 🏃‍♂️

If someone tells you a magic stretch for all sciatica, run 🏃‍♀️

The sciatic nerve has many triggers, and management needs to be specific to the cause, not just a blanket, one size fits all 'sciatica protocol'.

Healthy nervous systems are not always calm.

✨️Whilst it's great there's more talk about fight/flight and rest/relax, and the impact on our bodies, we also need to remember that fight/flight is not inherently bad.

🥷Fight/flight is our body ramping up for being busy, getting stuff done and digging into reserves to produce power for whats to come.

A healthy nervous system will go into fight/flight and tense up.

But it comes back down to recover.

There are times to honour the chaos.
There are times to honour zen.

Most people are having a healthy response to their environment or experiences.

Clock watching, living in anticipation, stiff upper lip, overbearing people, isolated family, lack of varied movement, clean air, processed food, poor sleep, previous experiences etc are all valud reasons for your nervous system to be activated.

The long term answer to this is not cbd, magnesium, deep breathing or a holiday (or a massage or adjustment). Might take the edge off but it wont last forever.

Its usually addressing:

A. The amount youre asking of it.

B. The reasons why youre asking so much

C. Allowing some energy OUT not pushing it deeper in.

Tap to pause ⏸️

16 weeks pregnant and my SI joints, hips and low back are needing more but adapted TLC.

So im making choices 3rd trimester me will be grateful for 🤰

Lizard crawls are great for hypermobile hips and pelvis BUT itll feel better if youve strengthened and learnt about wrist loading, and its hard so it took me a while to get here.

Running and squats can still be great but as Im hypermobile anyway, they are too linear (single plane) and I need more dynamic control and proprioception than that.

Why train? Im high risk for pelvic girdle pain (PGP) and i will not be going down easy ❌️💪❌️💪

Plus the thought of birth gives me the wiggins so I will do everything in my power for an easier birth and reduced tearing!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Surprise! 🤰

Or as a few of you have said "I KNEW IT", maybe not *such* a surprise.

Coming up 16 weeks, due 1st Sep, she's a girl, i did not first trimester well and feeling much better! Just a bit sleepy and having to do more stability training as these hypermobile pelvic joints already have a mind of their own.

Shes 12 cm head to ass, plus little leggies. I can feel little flutters, no weird cravings but blood sugar highs/lows hit different.

Complete Maternity leave is obviously not an option for me but will keep everyone posted 🌟

This is technically my 4th 2025 pregnancy so we're just taking each week as it comes. The duality of pregnancy after loss is that yes its exciting but it does come with a slight undertone of lingering dread.

But on the bright side of repeating first trimester several times, I do have a bunch of 'how to effectively manage morning sickness' protocols and advice!

Happy mothers day to every woman whos tried to carry, has partially carried, whos carried them here, or whos raised them 🤍

Lots of love,

Jess

Variety is the spice of life 🌶🌶🌶

Yes all these bits are great, they all have benefits but when you mix it together *chefs kiss*. 👩‍🍳

It can seem like a lot so in a nutshell:

(Coupled movement is when you do 2 directions in one movement, like flex AND rotate).

💪 Strength
Applies moderate stress on power muscles (and bones) so that they heal stronger. Can be adapted for endurance or power or specific needs.

Its your gym or lifting stuff, but also can limit mobility as muscles naturally get stiffer as they get stronger, and usually just train up/down, push/pull, left/right rather than exploring full ranges of coupled movement. Often coupled movement is viewed as 'bad form'.

💃 Mobility
Yoga, flexibility, passive stretches. Helps more in the moment, but less long term benefits than the others.

More coupled movement, so more prep for real life movement. Does not build endurance or power.

🧠 Proprioception
Coordination drills, spatial awareness, fiddly activation exercises that you'll get annoyed with. Talks to the brain, so the brain sends better quality signals back.

Alphabet or balance drills, predictive control, reflexes, vestibular training. You'll get better results at the others (without needing to actually practice them) if you have better proprioception.

✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Make decisions 70 year old you will appreciate ✨️

And never listen to ANYONE that sells you 'one magic cure'.

✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

A lot of sports do all 3, hence why theyre so beneficial for kids brain development.

Body and the brain is a feedback loop ♾️♾️♾️♾️

Happy IWD 🤍

Here's to strong women 🤍

I will always appreciate the women that came before me, my foremothers and what they have experienced.

The women who raised me, the women who never as a child focused on my looks before they focused on being brave or strong, who never held me back because 'thats not what girls do'.

Here's to every woman ive met whos shaped me, my family, the women that sent me balloons and flowers when sh gets real, the women that give me a kick up the backside to get on with it, the horsey girls that taught me to keep your eyes up, take a deep breath, put your fear away and send it.

Here's to my old Ann Summers girls who i am in awe of every single one of you and taught me so much on how to navigate life 🤍

Here's to strong women.

May we raise them, may we be them 🤍

(Not saying things are perfect buts its good to just sit and appreciate sometimes)

Big love,

Jess xo

Professional Development 🧠📖

To retain our licence, Chiropractors must do 30 hours of further training per year and Jen and I have just completed some enhanced training on temporomandibular (jaw).

Whilst its always something that we work with when its flaring up, its often overlooked and as its such a big balance centre (high proprioceptive feedback) and has a huge correlation with neck and shoulder due to connecting muscles (scalenes, hyoid group, scm, suboccipitals, traps), which can extend ever further down in certain cases.

Treatment pathway

✨️History - painful at rest or movement? Clicking? Locking? Food limitations? Headaches? Tinnitus? Ear pain? Onset?

✨️ Assessment - breathing patterns, resting muscle tension, how jaw tracking changes with tongue and eye muscle activation

✨️ Testing - more tracking, muscle function inc masseter, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoid, digastric. Compression and distraction testing for the integrity of the joint, disc and muscles.
..
Once youve diagnosed it as capsular, tracking, disc displacement etc, then you can treat accordingly:

✨️ Hands on techniques - massage, activation, joint mobility and stability

✨️ Neuromuscular rehab - training the muscles to fire up in better patterns and create new habits

✨️ Strength training - the 'classic' jaw exercises youd normally get from your GP etc.

✨️ Lifestyle advice - resting chin on hand, chewing nails, stress management etc
