It’s that time of year,
ARE YOU TAKING YOUR VITAMIN D?
Now the days are short, light levels are much less & sunlight is hit & miss, so unless you are going abroad you are not likely to be making any Vitamin D, your body needs sunlight to synthesise this vitamin. It is present in certain foods but generally in not enough quantities to give us adequate levels.
What do we need Vitamin D? Is it just for bones?
No, bone health is just one of the benefits of adequate levels of Vitamin D, it’s is also for pain, depression, fatigue, cancer, stroke, heart disease, MS & immunity. It is essential that babies & all children up to the age of 4 take a supplement. Elderly people also, especially those in nursing homes who do not get outside also need it. In fact by the end of the winter about 50% of the population in the U.K will test deficient.
Those with musculoskeletal problems, that is all my patients should supplement themselves & also test to see if the amount they are taking is adequate, there is a simple test from www.vitamindtest.org.uk at a cost of £29 for a finger tip blood test.
