In my personal life I belong to a fitness group on FB and today someone posted her reflections on and reactions to something someone had once posted elsewhere - "Don't quit from the couch." She's coming from a weight-loss, health perspective yet the principle applies to any goal or target we set. Don't give up when you're not doing whatever it is you said you'd do. If you've decided to go walking, go. Even when you arrive at the park where you thought you'd go walking, you can turn around and go home. But once you have got there, you may as well walk a bit. And so she progressed, little by little, extending her performance at her own rate. The lesson is: quit while you're doing it if you want, but don't quit from the couch.

I'm just watching the BBC Four TV show Dog Tales: the Making of Man's Best Friend. Among other things, Episode 1 discusses the age-old debate, did early humans tame wolves into dogs, or did early wolves choose to live with and adapt around early humans? The answer? lt was the wolves 😀 and to quote, "survival of the fittest turned out to be survival of the friendliest." And that's true for us too, social interaction is crucial to our health and wellbeing, even small things like nodding a thank-you to a stranger in the supermarket makes us feel better.

Good to see the Prince of Wales endorsing social prescription. Watch out for this, it's coming, it may already be happening near you. Social prescription is where GP surgeries can "prescribe," that is, advise and refer socially isolated people to day centres, activities and so on in their area that will help them meet other people. And now more than ever, we know just how debilitating being on your own can be, day after day after day. Don't be afraid to ask!
