Compensation, you really don’t want!!!

When your necks been feeling tight
Your head starts tilting too
In turn you start to lean one side
Your vision goes askew

In time pain starts to travel
Muscles begin to shake
Your shoulders go all wonky
And your arms begin to ache

The pull on muscle fibres
Sends throbbing down your spine
You’re even tender through the ribs
They should be feeling fine?

Your pelvis compensating,
Put pressure through One hip
Which sends concussion down one leg
Your mood begins to dip

You take hot baths, you’re popping pills
The pain keeps you up late
Hot or cold - Up or down
It stops you moving straight!

What once was just a ni**le
Became Compensatory pain
It started out just in your neck
But now affects your frame!

We all know how it feels
We’ve all been there of course
It isn’t just us humans.
It can happen to your horse!!

But before things get to this stage
Keep your horse supple and free
“Release it’s full potential”

Why horses never wear shoulder pads ?

The fashion for shoulder pads in jackets, suits and tops in the 1980’s was rather big. And seems to be making a comeback now!!
The idea was to “power dress” and make you look bigger, bolder and more confident!

We humans are able to wear them, as we have collarbones (Clavicle). These act as a rigid bony support, from chest to shoulder. keeping the shoulder joint out to the side and our arms free moving, away from the body. Higher or lower depending on your mood and the number of times you’ve broken them! (Horse riders will know these bones very well!?!?!)

But horses have no collarbone (clavicle)! In fact their shoulders are held to the body in a thoracic sling, made up of muscle ligaments, tendons and Fascia. With no bony attachment to the body at all!!!This allows leg movement forwards and backwards, but no real free movement out to the side.

So next time you reach for that cuppa or even while you’re reading this, think of the horse and what we would be like without collarbones? And also where those shoulder pads would sit!😂

Why wait?

If your necks been feeling tense
Your shoulders tighten too
Which pulls your muscles taut one side
This sends your back askew!

That tilts your pelvis, alters your hip
Your leg swings to the side
Your knee rolls in, your ankle out
its altering your stride!

You take hot baths, you’re popping pills
The pain keeps you up late
Hot or cold - Up or down
It stops you walking straight!

What once was just a ni**le
Has now become a pain
It started out just in your neck
But now affects your frame!

We all know how it feels
We’ve all been there of course
It isn’t just us humans.
It can happen to your horse!!

But before things get to this stage

A horse or ponies head weighs approximately 10% of its whole body weight.
But unlike us humans, whose heads are supported from gravity by our skeletons. The equines head is held in mid air, with only the muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons and fascia of the neck for support. In turn putting pressure on the horses whole Musco skeletal system, right the way through to the back of their hind hooves!
When you think the average horse (15.2hh)weighs 500 kg which means their head weight would be around 50 kg.
That would be like carrying a large Rottweiler đŸŸ out in front of you all day long! Imagine that!! đŸ˜±
So if you see your horse or pony resting it’s chin, on the stable door, on the fence or even on your arm or shoulder.
Remember all they are doing, is like we need to do sometimes
Is Just “ taking the weight off “
