Congratulations Dr Shafeek 👍

Putting the 𝑹𝒐𝒚𝒂𝒍 in Worcestershire Royal 👑
Dr Shafeek was invited by the King to attend the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace this week.

Dr Shafeek has spent more than 22 years working as Consultant Haematologist in our hospitals and during his time he's worked alongside both his father and his son, who both spent time working as doctors in the same Haematology department.

Having treated patients with blood cancer for many years, in 2019 Dr Shafeek was sadly diagnosed with blood cancer himself. After entering remission he returned to work and continues to help patients with this condition to this day.

Dr Shafeek is a hugely admired colleague and his work has established our hospitals as a regional leader in Haematology education. He also teaches students from Birmingham Medical School and Worcestershire’s Three Counties Medical School.

In 2022 his patients nominated him as a Commonwealth Games baton bearer. Instrumental in establishing the Worcestershire’s Myeloma Patient Group, he is also a patron for Cure Leukaemia and Leukaemia Care.

Congratulations Dr Shafeek!

Well done Jude 👏

Well done Jude 👏

Jude is one of over 50,000 Healthcare Scientists working in the NHS. She works in our hospital as a Trainee Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy Physics.

Together healthcare scientists provide the scientific backbone of the NHS and their work underpins 80% of all diagnoses. This week for Healthcare Science Week, we're celebrating the vital work they do.

Jude's work helps to improve the quality of life for those living with cancer. As we learn more about the body’s response to radiotherapy and the technology available to treat cancer, we improve and change the treatment methods.

Working as a clinical scientist in radiotherapy means being at the forefront of using these changes. This could be how much treatment a patient gets, how long it lasts, or how their treatment is planned.

We’ve made the news - Well done to all the Worcestershire Waders and staff

New hydrotherapy rehab sessions at Worcestershire Royal Hospital are helping breast cancer patients experience reduced pain and improved movement.

The course - which is developed and run by radiographers from our Worcestershire Oncology Centre - is the first of its kind in the Midlands, with all 53 participants reporting an improvement in their range of movement.

It involves carrying out specific exercises in a warm water swimming pool to help aid rehabilitation following treatment. The course also provides a great opportunity for breast cancer survivors to meet others who have been through a similar experience.

As well as reducing pain and increasing the range of shoulder movement after treatment, hydrotherapy (and physical activity in general) can also help reduce the risk of lymphoedema – a chronic swelling in the body’s tissues – occurring, which can be caused by surgery and chemotherapy.
