If you visit Worcestershire Royal Hospital this weekend you'll notice a change to our usual one-way traffic.

From 10pm on Friday until 6pm on Sunday, the one-way route will be reversed so we can make some essential repair works.

When you enter the site, signage will direct traffic round to the left of the island in front of the Oncology Centre. Vehicles will leave the site via the Emergency Department car park onto Newtown Road.

Traffic management staff and road signs will be in place so please follow their directions and the signage.

During this time buses will be diverted to the Newtown Road bus stops.

Meet our Healthcare Play Specialists โ€“ Your child's hospital heroes! ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™€๏ธ
Imagine a hospital stay as a child. A little bit scary, right? Well that's where our amazing Healthcare Play Specialists come in! โœจ

These degree-trained professionals use therapeutic play to help kids understand their illness or treatment, ease anxiety, and make hospital visits less daunting.

Play Specialists use 4 different types of play (preparation play, distraction play, post-procedural play, and normal play) to reduce children's stress and help normalise the hospital environment.

But our team are here for the whole family - they also offer support and play to siblings, as we know how illness and hospital visits can affect the wider family too.

Our Healthcare Play Specialists even offer support and memory-making for families whose children are receiving end-of-life care or those who have recently lost their child.

Last week was 'Play in Healthcare Week', and our team went all out with a GIANT game of Operation, and planned visits from magicians and princesses to keep children in our hospital smiling and laughing!

Yesterday, the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Bowel Screening team were under starter's orders at the Worcester races! ๐ŸŽ

Our team were galloping towards greater awareness of Bowel cancer which is one of the most common types of cancer. Screening can help prevent this type of cancer or find it at an early stage, when itโ€™s easier to treat.

If youโ€™re 50 to 74, you should have received your NHS bowel cancer screening (FIT) kit through the post. Out of every 5,000 people who use their test kit, nine turn out to have cancer. But if itโ€™s spotted earlier, the chances of recovering from bowel cancer are higher. The test can be done in the comfort of your home and only needs a tiny sample of poo to test for signs of cancer. Donโ€™t put it off.

A real heart-stopper! Baby Reggie arrived into the world in an ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ญ way...

When Lucy went into labour with her second child, everything happened ๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐ฒ quickly.

Before she could make it into the maternity department at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, she passed our Cardiology Department just as her labour progressed even more. She called out for help and was met with immediate assistance from our Cardiology team.

There was no time to get Lucy to the Delivery Suite, but Baby Reggie was born safe and well weighing 6lb 4oz, in a department more used to dealing with patients with heart issues. Lucy was in good hands though, and was soon transferred to our postnatal ward alongside her newborn son.

Lucy and her mum said: "The team did amazingly and we'd like to express our gratitude and praise to the amazing staff members who helped that day. I'm sure they were just as surprised as us. A thank you will never be enough for what you did that day but thank you all so much. Two members of staff from Cardiology also came to visit us on the maternity ward after they finished their shift which was so lovely."

Reggie went home with mum Lucy to meet his brother, 2-year-old, Flynn.

Well done to all involved!

A woman who was paralysed following a rare complication of cancer has thanked doctors at Worcestershire Royal Hospital after shocking experts and learning to walk again.

Sylvia was diagnosed with paraplegic lymphoma after our specialists found that non-Hodgkin lymphoma had caused tumours which were compressing her spinal nerve and had left her completely bed bound.

Consultant Haematologist, Dr Salim Shafeek put Sylvia on a strong course of chemotherapy treatment to shrink the tumours on her spinal cord which were causing the paralysis, but her medical team did not expect her to ever walk again.

But many months later, returning for a follow-up appointment recently, Sylvia amazed Dr Shafeek by standing up and walking in the treatment room.

Dr Shafeek said: โ€œIt is incredibly rare to walk again once youโ€™re paraplegic โ€“ I have never seen it before in my 30-year career. She was completely unable to move for herself and we thought she would never walk again, so to now be standing up and walking around is really incredible.โ€
