Great couple of days spent learning all-things balance and turning current research into practice!

Key learning points relevant to practice (what did I learn?):

1. How to assess motor components of balance
◦ Steady state / Proactive / Reactive
◦ Sitting / Standing / Walking

2. Sensory contributions to normal and impaired balance
◦ Vision / Vestibular / Somatosensory
• Of the 3 sensory systems, no single one is important; the level of importance can vary according to a number of factors (i.e. age, environment or the type of balance task)

3. Balance training need to be completed as a life-long intervention to have any effect
◦ Can reduce risk of falls
◦ Slow age-related decline
◦ Keep you independent
• Balance training reshapes your brain; improving motor control, coordination, reaction time and neuro plasticity

Certainly have a new perspective to balance and how we can assess and train this in a variety of patients.

Any additional thoughts/ideas regarding balance training for neuro patients / older patients greatly received to further expand my knowledge base 💪🙏

Rotation number 2️⃣ complete! ✅

A rotation with its challenges, highs and lows, but that’s what forms development, growth and resilience.

This rotation saw me work with more complex patients within a D2A model, be part of complex discharge planning and best interest meetings, managed the 26 bed ward as the lead Physio in the absence of my Band 6 for short periods and, implement service developments to improve patient care.

It was a rotation where, now on reflection of the past 6 months, I have learnt an awful lot, achieved a great deal and most importantly seen growth in myself and my clinical practice. Whilst there are still areas to develop, which just comes with time and experience, I can continue to the next step of my Physiotherapy journey with greater confidence and more hunger to learn and achieve so much more.

I was asked to list 3 professional things I’ve learnt from this rotation:

1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help - This isn’t a weakness. We can’t know everything. Talking to others and sharing ideas/opinions can really help.

2. Know your limits - Never be afraid to admit that. Recognising your limitations is key to growth.

3. Use your team - We certainly can’t help to make a difference to someone’s world on our own. Draw on wider skills and expertise.

In a matter of days I’ll begin my stroke rotation, and I’m so excited to see what this has to offer.

So today marks the end of my first physio rotation.

7 months ago, I started my physiotherapy journey in the adult specialist rehabilitation division, specialising in geriatric rehabilitation. And it’s honestly been the best start of my physiotherapy career I could’ve wished for.

The Therapy Team I was welcomed into and became a part of over this period has been utterly amazing and so supportive, which as a new Band 5 was exactly what I needed.

This rotation has not only been an enjoyable one, but full of unexpected opportunities. I’ve completed numerous courses and training (dementia, NIV, clinical safety intervention to name a few. I’ve been responsible for the case load on the ward in the absence of my band 6. I’ve assisted my band 6 with the mentorship of two physiotherapy students. I’ve taken a band 3 therapy assistant under my wing, acting as her mentor and helping her sign off her competencies (whilst completing my own). I’ve submitted a proposal to increase signage for patient family/visitors to help reduce patient falls. I’ve helped to reintroduce patient therapy exercise groups. It’s certainly been an experience, and one that has developed my confidence and physiotherapy skills.

I’m looking forward to carrying all of this into my next rotation and to continue this development 💪

3 weeks ago, I officially graduated from the University of Birmingham with a MSc Physiotherapy degree.

Safe to say it’s been a challenging 2 years, with many ups and downs, both personal and professional, but it’s these experiences that build us into who we are.

I’m forever thankful to the wonderful support network I have around me who helped make this degree possible.

I’m now a little over 2 months into my new role as a Band 5 Rotational Physiotherapist in the Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and I couldn’t be enjoying my new role more! Yes it’s full of challenges, especially with winter pressures and the build up to Christmas, but it’s filled me with opportunity and a platform to develop, both professionally and the care and services given to our patients.

Plans are in motion for 2025…let’s see where it takes us! 🚀

This is growth.
This is how we do better.

Todays marks the end of an era.

F3S has been my home since 2019. In that time there have been a number of highs and lows, but through it all, this place has always remained constant. It’s a place where I really come into my own as a fresh graduate Sports Therapist, developing my skills, self confidence and personal growth, all of which I will carry forward into my next chapter. I’ll be forever grateful for the mentorship, support, friendships and memories made over the past 5 years. F3S will certainly hold a special place in my heart and I will look back on my time here fondly. To all at F3S, thank you from the bottom of my heart. This place will continue to grow and empower everyone who walks through those doors.

In a matter of days, I will be taking a new path, a new challenge and begin my next chapter as a qualified and chartered physiotherapist, stepping into the NHS providing adult specialist rehabilitation.
