Maisy is officially off duty… 🐾

After a busy few days “helping” in sessions, greeting children and making sure she was at the centre of absolutely everything, she’s now taking a well-earned rest!

Therapy assistant life is clearly exhausting… but she’ll be back tomorrow, ready to support (and supervise!) all over again 💛

I’ve recently discovered a new therapy use for one of my son’s much-loved toys 🦖

Rex from Toy Story was one of his favourites when he was younger - and I hadn’t realised until recently that his tail is removable!!! That makes him a brilliant visual resource for teaching final sounds!

Using pairs like bow and boat, we can:

👂 Listen for whether a final sound is there or missing

🦖 Use Rex’s tail as a simple visual cue

➡️ Tail on = we can hear the final sound
➡️ Tail off = the sound is missing

It’s a simple, concrete way to help children notice those final sounds before working on producing them - all while keeping things playful and engaging.

A lovely reminder of how a bit of flexible thinking can turn something familiar into a really effective therapy tool ✨

It really meant a lot to receive a message this week from a former SaLT Assistant colleague and friend, thanking me for the support I gave her daughter when she was thinking about making the leap from the NHS into independent Speech and Language Therapy work.

I’ve always believed in being generous with my time, sharing knowledge and supporting others where I can — not expecting anything in return, just because it feels like the right way to work.
That said, it is always appreciated when someone takes the time to acknowledge it. It genuinely means a lot.

Over the years, I’ve become much more aware of the importance of surrounding yourself with people who show kindness, demonstrate genuine care, support one another and truly want to see others succeed. Those are the relationships I choose to invest in — both professionally and personally.

Grateful for the people who recognise and reflect those values 💛

Maisy is ready and waiting for a day of Speech Therapy 🐾

She decided to come and “help” set up today’s session… moving things around and making sure she was very much central to the activity 😄

It’s a lovely reminder of just how valuable a therapy cat can be.

Animals like Maisy can:

✨ Reduce anxiety and help children feel more relaxed
✨ Create natural opportunities for communication (“What’s she doing?” “Where’s she gone?”)
✨ Support attention and engagement in a way that feels playful, not pressured
✨ Encourage spontaneous language and interaction
✨ Help build connection and trust – often before any ‘therapy’ even begins

For some children, talking directly to an adult can feel overwhelming. But talking about Maisy, to Maisy, or even just sharing space with her can be a gentle and meaningful starting point.

And let’s be honest… a furry co-therapist who insists on being centre stage makes everything a little more engaging 🐱✨

Would your child be more motivated to join in if Maisy was part of the session?

I had the pleasure of presenting today at the Manor MAT Conference on Gestalt Language Processing.

It was a real privilege to share this approach with such a committed and engaged group of education professionals. The discussions, reflections and enthusiasm in the room were fantastic—and it’s clear just how important this area is becoming within schools.

Gestalt Language Processing is still something many are just beginning to explore, but the difference that understanding and supporting it properly can make is truly phenomenal. When we adapt our approach, we can open up so many more opportunities for meaningful communication.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a positive session—it was fantastic to be part of.

If your school or setting would like to learn more about Gestalt Language Processing training, please feel free to get in touch 📩

A small gesture that made a big difference yesterday ☕️

As an independent Speech and Language Therapist, I’m always so grateful that schools choose to buy in my support. That’s something I never take for granted — it means they trust my work, value what I do and believe in the difference it makes for their children.

Yesterday I was welcomed with a hot chocolate (with marshmallows!) which was such a kind and unexpected touch. It really set me up for the day and made me feel genuinely appreciated.

I travel quite a distance to many of the schools I work with, but it’s the relationships, respect and appreciation that make it all worthwhile.

Thank you to the schools I work with for your continued trust — and for the little things that make a big difference 🤍

I received another enquiry today from a family in Dudley for Speech and Language Therapy support and although I wasn’t able to offer a space this time, it really made me stop and reflect.

Having spent over 20 years living and working in Dudley, it will always hold a special place in my heart. Even after moving to Worcester nearly 8 years ago, it feels incredibly humbling that my name is still known there and that families continue to reach out to me for support. I’m also still lucky enough to work in schools in Dudley, which means those connections have never really gone away.

I’m also very aware that some families continue to travel from the Black Country to see me. That level of trust and commitment is something I never take for granted and I feel genuinely grateful for it.

My work has always been built on word of mouth. I don’t advertise on any platforms other than this page, so the fact that people continue to recommend me and share my name really does speak volumes.

I may not always be able to accommodate everyone, which is never an easy thing to say, but I truly appreciate every enquiry, every recommendation and every family who chooses to get in touch.

Thank you for your continued trust and support 💛

Happy 60th Birthday Carol Sutton 🎉

Carol and I were first colleagues (and friends) in the NHS and it feels really special that our paths have come back together again as independent practitioners working within the same MAT.

Carol shares daily gratitude posts on her own page, so today it feels only right to say how genuinely grateful I am for her. She brings a depth of knowledge and experience that is truly impressive and she is always so generous in sharing this with others.

We work incredibly well together - supporting each other through those trickier cases, talking things through, problem solving and ultimately helping each other do an even better job for the children and schools we support. That kind of professional partnership is something I never take for granted.

Wishing you a wonderful birthday Carol and thanking you for being such a knowledgeable, supportive and thoughtful colleague and friend 💛

✨ Gestalt Language Processing in action ✨

Sharing a lovely moment from a recent session (videos shared with consent).

This fantastic little learner is predominantly a Gestalt Language Processor, currently developing language at Stage 1 by building a bank of meaningful, functional gestalts. Yesterday, we introduced some new phrases including - “I need help” and “Here I am.”

Through playful, tuneful modelling within motivating play, she began to copy and spontaneously use these new gestalts in interaction. Have a listen!!

Gestalt Language Processors often tune into the intonation and melody of language before the individual words, so we model phrases in a musical, connected way from their perspective that they can absorb and use as whole units. It was a joy to see how responsive she was to this approach. She was completely absorbed - it truly resonated with her - and she came into her own 🥰

A special mention to her fantastic Mum, who has taken everything on board and adapted her own interaction style so naturally. By modelling, waiting and joining in, she is creating the perfect environment for progress - and it’s really working! 🤗

When we adapt to how a child naturally learns language, rather than expecting them to adapt to us, progress can be incredible to watch 💛
