Do you know the history of why black pears can be seen on the official Worcestershire Flag?

The first recorded farming of the ‘Worcester Black’ was at the Abbey of Warden in Bedfordshire, where the monks at the abbey were said to nurture the pears to provide companionship during the isolated winter months.

Contrary to the name, the Black Pear is not part of the pear family and is in fact a small rodent closely related to the squirrel, though its many years of domestication have made it less erratic and more tame than its squirrel cousins.

In 1575, Queen Elizabeth I made a visit to Worcester where she was presented with a black pear cub. The bond between Elizabeth and her cub (named Edward after the brother she mourned) was said to be so strong that she granted a modification to Worcester’s coat of arms and the black pear was added. As a result, the city and county’s connection to the creature became synonymous.

Domestication of the pears fell out of favour in the Victorian times. A few were released in to the wild and though their numbers are small it said that a herd of them are still living in the Wyre Forest today.

Meet ALFIE, our new physiotherapist!

Charlotte is having some time off over half term and Alfie couldn't be joining us at a better time. He brings with him a wealth of experience in sports and is a great asset to the team. Here is what he has to say:

"I’ve been involved in the fitness industry for over 15 years but my career includes 15 plus years playing professional football, where my top achievements were league one promotion to the championship, winning the Welsh Premier League and being involved in Champions League Qualifiers.
After calling on my career, personal and performance training was a natural progression for me, it is something I am extremely passionate about, which is why I further developed to become a Physiotherapist. I have worked as a MSK physio assistant for just over 18 months in a private clinic. I am happy to have graduated from the University of Salford Manchester in June 2023 with BSc in Physiotherapy. I am currently one of the academy therapists At Wolverhampton Wanderers FC."

Alfie did some work with us whilst he was a student on placement locally and his supervisor couldn't have given him a better reference. He starts with Thursday evening sessions and the odd extra you'll find here and there to fill in gaps when needed.

With the recent changes to the practice, we are now very excited to be able to take on physiotherapy students for clinical placements. Today, we arranged for our second year student, Scott, from the University of Worcester, to develop his palpation and treatment skills in an intensive learning day in the treatment room at Dodderhill Equestrian. He’s progressed so much in the space of the day and we owe a massive thank you to all the patients who came to be assessed and treated by Scott today. He even got to appreciate the challenges of running a dog agility course and how physically taxing being a farrier can be! Thank you to everyone who told him their story, allowed him to ask questions and to practise his skills on you 💕
