St Barnabas House

St Barnabas House St Barnabas is a charity providing specialist palliative care within the hospice and the community.

St Barnabas House is the hospice for the Worthing, Adur, Arun and Henfield areas. Our care extends well beyond the hospice walls, with nurses visiting patients and families at home. While others might need to stay at the hospice to get help with complex symptoms. For those dealing with the impact of a recent diagnosis, there are opportunities to meet others who are on a similar journey. They can t

ake part in a range of activities from relaxation and exercise classes to gardening, art, cooking, and talking groups - helping them to live well for longer. And, when the time comes, St Barnabas is there at the end of people’s lives so they can die with dignity in a warm and caring environment. It's thanks to the generosity of the local community that all of this is possible. It costs nearly £10 million every year to provide hospice care for local people, with only 22% of this coming from government funding. You can show your support by fundraising, volunteering, taking part in a challenge event, playing the St Barnabas House lottery, or leaving a gift in your Will.

Yesterday, we were proud to celebrate International Nurses’ Day at St Barnabas 💙

Our nursing teams were treated to some surprise cupcakes, and added reflections to our reflection posters, while colleagues, patients, families and visitors shared heartfelt messages of thanks on our gratitude walls.

The kind words and messages shared were a powerful reminder of the difference our nurses make every single day - through their compassion, expertise and unwavering support for those in our care.

To all our nurses: thank you for everything you do.

As International Nurses’ Day comes to a close, we’re sharing a special poem about what it means to be a nurse. It’s a heartfelt reflection on the difference nursing makes, every single day.

Thank you again to all our nursing teams for everything you do 💙

This International Nurses’ Day, we’re celebrating the incredible nurses across St Barnabas and Southern Hospice Group 💙

Through their expertise, professionalism, compassion and courage, they support patients and families during some of life’s most challenging moments - both in our hospices and out in the community.

In this video, some of our nurses share what hospice nursing means to them, what people might be surprised to learn, and why this work matters so deeply.

Thank you to all our nursing teams - for everything you do, every single day.

If one of our nurses has made a difference to you or your family, we’d love you to leave a message of thanks in the comments below.

As Dying Matters Awareness Week draws to a close, we’re sharing the blog that we posted earlier this week, ‘Died’ or ‘passed away’? Why language matters in hospice care:

Thank you to everyone who commented on the topic and joined the conversation – we appreciate your feedback. How we talk about death and dying is key to promoting understanding and helping people feel more comfortable with the topic. That’s why, at Southern Hospice Group, we’re updating our guidance on this for all colleagues.

This Dying Matters Awareness Week, we wanted to spotlight the safe spaces we offer across Southern Hospice Group, where those navigating the complex world of bereavement can come together to connect, share, and talk over a coffee.

St Barnabas House Bereavement Cafes take place fortnightly in Rustington. We also hold Community Grief Cafes on alternate Sundays at the hospice. These are hosted by volunteers Ness and Charly, who have first-hand experience of bereavement. For more information, visit our website (link below).

At Barnabas House we know these conversations are never easy, but we also know that thoughtful communication can make a real difference. The way we talk about dying matters. In these meetings, you’ll have space to share stories and forge friendships, helping each other to find comfort and hope.

Today marks the start of Dying Matters Awareness Week — an opportunity to break down the stigma and taboo around talking about death and dying.

The words we use can make these conversations feel more supportive — or more difficult. At Southern Hospice Group, we’re updating our guidance for colleagues, and we asked our medical director, Dr Jane Whitehurst, why clarity and consistency matter.

Read our blog, ‘Died’ or ‘passed away’? Why language matters in hospice care:

Which words feel most respectful and helpful to you when talking about this sensitive topic? We’d love to hear what language our community uses (and why) in the comments.

After experiencing the care her mum Annie received at St Barnabas House during her final weeks, Sarah knew she wanted to give something back. This weekend, she’s running a marathon at Mid Sussex Marathon Weekend in her mum’s memory — turning grief into action and helping to fund live-changing hospice care for others. 🏃‍♀️

She says:

“One moment during Mum’s hospice stay will be with me forever. Mum adored her cat, Peggy, and as the end drew near, the team at St Barnabas made sure we could bring Peggy in for one last cuddle with Mum. That kind of moment simply wouldn’t have been possible in a hospital setting. That’s the essence of hospice care — the staff listen to what really matters to every patient. I’ll be carrying Mum’s memory with me every step of the way — and I couldn’t be prouder to run for her and for St Barnabas.” 💙

👏 Good luck Sarah – we’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! 🏃‍♀️
