It's OCD Awareness Week!

We spoke to Han, a Peer Youth Mental Health Workers here at West Sussex Mind, about her experience with OCD.

This remember to celebrate the small wins in life 🎉

Life can be taxing and as such it's easy to take things for granted and to overlook the positive aspects of our lives.

Consider stepping back and taking a break to pause and think about the positive things in your life.

Inequalities in mental health support are real – and something we must work to challenge. At West Sussex Mind, we recognise that Black communities face a number of inequalities in mental health support and treatment. These include:

- Black people are four times more likely to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act than white people. Being sectioned means you can be kept in hospital against your will.

- Black people are ten times more likely to receive a community treatment order after leaving hospital for their mental health to ensure that they follow certain rules.

- Doctors are far more likely to diagnose Black people with schizophrenia than their white counterparts.

- People from minoritised communities are more likely to experience anxiety or depression, but are less likely to receive mental health support for these problems. This may be due to a host of complex reasons, such as lack of trust in the mental health system, stigma in communities or prior experience of inequality and racism in services.

Everyone deserves access to support that feels safe and inclusive 🖤💙

💙 Hello everyone! 💙

I’m collecting donations for a Christmas tombola in aid of West Sussex Mind, and I’d love your support! 🥰

If anyone has something they could donate — big or small — it would be amazing. Every little prize helps us raise money to support local mental health services. 💪

🎁 Ideas for donations:
• Chocolates, wine, or treats
• Toiletries, candles, or pamper items
• Small gifts, games, or crafts

If you can help please contact leanne.challen@westsussexmind.org or leave your donations at one of our hubs.

Every single contribution makes a difference and will help raise vital funds for West Sussex Mind 💙

Thank you so much for your kindness and support! 🙏 And a massive thank you to everyone who has already donated prizes or money to buy prizes.

❌ MYTH: “OCD just means being really tidy or liking things organised.”

✅ FACT: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is a serious mental health condition that goes far beyond neatness.

OCD involves distressing, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or rituals (compulsions) that people feel driven to perform in order to reduce anxiety. It’s not a personality quirk – it can be overwhelming and exhausting.

Some people may struggle with fears about harm coming to loved ones, worries about contamination or needing to repeat actions until they “feel right.”

Everyone’s experience is different – and it’s about much more than cleaning or organising.

💙 At West Sussex Mind, we’re here to challenge stigma and raise awareness. The more we understand what OCD really is, the better we can support those living with it.
