We've created a range of shared food experiences from field, boat and kitchen for all ages and in a range of different settings. We realise that it is when we grow and cook food together and learn from others that we build community round the simple pleasure of a plate of good food and nurture relationships with others. We Are FoodPioneers works with local food ventures, farmers, voluntary groups, community chefs, beekeepers and start up foodies, bringing people together to enjoy food in community, across generations, cultures and social backgrounds. Come and meet our Worthing Bees! 🐝❤️🐝

Would you like to find out more about the fascinating world of the honeybee? Then join us for a two hour “Meet the Bees” session in Worthing, Sussex.

During the first hour we will introduce you to the world of bees, how they work, their lifecycle and the distinctive roles played by the queen, workers and drones.

Throughout the second hour you will see the bees in action, as we ‘suit and boot’ up to conduct a live inspection of the honeybee hive and colony.

Honey Spinning Galore!

It has been a busy beekeeping season. With hives and stores building quickly due to good weather, and plentiful forage.

One of our junior helped us spin this year. We carefully uncapped the on frames from Queen Bess, Latifa, Victoria and Agatha and then placed them into our large metal drum spinner for extraction.

The honey flowed and slowly filled up the drum. After filtering and leaving for 24 hours, we were able to fill 95 jars, from our six supers!

The following day, we returned the empty frames to the to re-use. Later in the season, the wax caps will be melted down, and used for our wax wraps and candles.

We are incredibly grateful to Worthing Homes for loaning their communal kitchen to the Worthing Honey Collective for this honey extraction session.

Exciting News for Nature...

Food Pioneers have now rebranded to Pollinator Pioneers. With a great plans afoot, to benefit the local community and wildlife!

Inspired by the land and sea, our main purpose is to support ecological systems, increase the pollinator footprint locally and champion ocean conservation to strengthen biodiversity.

We aim to inspire mind-set change with initiatives that value pollinators, our green and blue space, and the vital role of the humble bee in building environmental resilience.

We hope you will join us through community events, workshops and volunteering opportunities. All of which, will be promoted on this platform over the coming months.

Join the movement!

Our mission is to promote the health of , and education is at the heart of what we do.

In celebration of , we hosted a group of students from Northbrook Met College at our Brooklands Park teaching .

We carried out 'introduction to ’ training, suited and booted up, and entered the apiary to inspect Queen Honeybun and Queen Luna. Our colonies were very well behaved, and the students were amazing, super calm and really engaged. We spotted both queens, brood, larvae, colourful , and lots of .

Hopefully, we have inspired the next generation of .

Our pollinator of the day… the hoverfly 💛🖤💚

As regular flower visitors to a wide range of plants and agricultural crops, hoverflies are some of the most important pollinators in many ecosystems. Although they can’t carry as much pollen on their bodies as bees, they can travel greater distances and make more flower visits.

Whilst adult hoverflies feed largely on nectar and pollen, hoverfly larvae feed on the likes of decaying animal matter, thrips and aphids (depending on the larvae species). Aphids cause millions of pounds worth of crop damage every year, so hoverfly larvae are almost essential in protecting agricultural farming.

Batesian mimicry’ refers to when a particular species mimics another unsavoury species to protect themselves from predators. In the case of the hoverfly, it does an impressive job of mimicking bees and wasps — in fact, it’s one of the best examples of Batesian mimicry in nature.

Not only are they furry like ‘Hymenoptera’ (the family that wasps and bees sit under), but some species also lay their eggs in bees’ nests, wave their front legs to resemble antennae or pretend to sting when provoked.

Some of the flowers that hoverflies pollinate have also learned to be skilled at mimicry. The orchid species ‘Epipactis veratrifolia’, for example, mimics the alarm pheromones that aphids release to attract hoverflies.

A third of wild bee and hoverfly species are in decline across Great Britain, raising concerns about biodiversity declines and the potential loss of pollinators.😢
