Spring energy pt2 ✊

It's may day, mid spring, and a season that offers nature's awakening and personal growth but it's not all beltane and birdsong... Spring is community, change and justice. In Chinese medicine, Spring is the season of the wood element (see previous post) and associated with the emotion of anger.

Of all emotions anger's often considered the most negative. Out of control it's destructive and violent. It lashes out, points fingers, and used as a weapon to harm. Because of unhealthy and misdirected acting out of anger, the emotion itself is also often considered bad.

Yet it's the energy of anger that galvanises activity and change in the world. Anger's fuelled by injustice, for ourselves and others.

If we reframe anger as an unstoppable force for action, we can channel it in healthy and very necessary directions. We can harness the strength of the emotion and alchemise it into a determined power to be ourselves and fight for what we stand for.

Yang wood energy is expressed so perfectly and powerfully when we see people rising up and uniting to change something that's unfair or cruel, or that isn't working for EVERYONE. Mysogyny, racism, apartheid, animal cruelty, genocide, transphobia, the list goes on - and on we must protest ✊✊

This is righteous anger. Directed at injustice and wrongdoing rather than personal grievances. It's generative, inclusive and redemptive anger. It punches up not down. It sticks up for those less powerful or experiencing harm. It comes from passion and compassion, and it fights for what's fair.

May Day represents 100s of years of history of fighting for equal rights. May day is a celebration of protest, agitation, unity, solidarity, community, peace and justice.

Take a moment this spring (and beyond) turn passion into action for others, however big or small, and keep up the good fights ✊✊✊

& if it all gets too much, you're feeling too much anger or too little... balance your wood element and hug a tree, listen to the birds and let nature sooth your nervous system 🐦 🌳

A happy customer yesterday 🤩

This patient operates heavy machinery including pneumatic drills for his job and regularly experiences elbow and back pain as a result of the constant tension and impact. With regular weekly treatments and now monthly top ups we've got the back pain down to pretty much non-existent - "the best it's ever been" - and the elbow pain to "just an occasional ni**le". He's also a fan of the post-work acu-snooze that inevitably happens with his evening treatments! 😴

Acupuncture works! Sometimes with only a few sessions but usually it takes consistency and ongoing support, especially if your job is the aggravating factor.

For this patient I used points on his hands and feet that connect to the area of back pain via the meridian system. No need for points directly over the painful area, and no need to undress or lay face down 🤗

Worthing Community Acupuncture now open every Wed, Thurs & Fri 🪄🪄🪄

Treatments offered on a sliding scale - pay what you can between £25-£50. Making it easier to make acupuncture a regular health maintenance practice.

And community acupuncture means you're helping not only yourself, but your community too! ⚖️

The feet of relaxed people easing their troubles in the mellow morning sunshine yesterday 💫

This week's reasons for treatment included...

Ptsd, back pain, frozen shoulder, digestive issues, fertility support, migraines, achilles pain, post viral fatigue, adhd related anxiety, insomnia, shingles, low mood, recurrent UTIs, knee pain, edema, menstrual regulation, perimenopause balancing and chemo treatment support.

Acupuncture increases blood flow to areas of pain and tension and discomfort bringing the o2, chemicals and nutrients needed for cell and tissue repair.

For internal imbalances acupuncture influences the body's own regulating systems by stimulating points on meridians that connect to the organs and strengthen functionality.

And don't wait until things get bad! The quicker we start treatment the quicker we repair.

In light of the extreme hate right now, I want to re-emphasise that everyone is welcome at the clinic - all colours, genders, religions, shapes, sizes, ages - everyone.

I set up Worthing Community Acupuncture as a safe and affordable space so more people in our community can relax and treat their pains in peace, and I especially want people from minority groups, under-served communities and survivors of violence to feel welcome.

It will always always always be my priority to promote and celebrate diversity, inclusivity, justice and kindness.

Sending love and solidarity to anyone scared to go about their lives right now, and to anyone sickened and trying their best to counter the hate ✌️💗

DIY acupressure point for anxiety 😌

Introducing... The stuff of legends... Yin Tang! Expertly modelled by the handsome - and anxious - Louis 🤩

I often get requests for Yintang in clinic as it can be an instant soooothe 😴 You can do a DIY activation with acupressure or just rest your attention here.

One of THE points for stress, anxiety, agitation, and insomnia 😊

Said to calm the "Shen" - loosely translated as our spirit or consciousness - this point is used to pacify the spirit and calm a busy, unsettled/unfocussed/restless "monkey mind" 🐒

Yintang translates as "hall of impression" indicating its influence on the mind - the impressions we receive and interpret, and what/how we impress on the world and those around us.

Cultivates mental clarity, inner vision, imagination, creativity, and spiritual insight.

1st mentioned in the "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Medicine" written 1000s of years ago, and in qigong this point is considered the location of the upper dantian (energy sphere) and space of spiritual wisdom 💫 YT is basically a legend 🙌

Also relieves generalised pain, sinus/nasal congestion, rhinitis, hay fever and headaches.

From a western pov, it lies over the pineal gland (described as the "seat of the soul by French philosopher Descartes) which produces melatonin - the hormone that regulates our sleep patterns, the lullaby of acupoints.

So give yourself a yintang massage before bed, or if you wake up in the night, or whenever you feel anxiety levels rising, or you need clarity, or to ignite a spark of pure imagination 🙌

You can just gently press or tap between the eyebrows, massage for 30 seconds or so and repeat whenever you need some calm. Add a calming essential oil if you so desire 💞

THE POINT OF ENDURANCE

Legend has it that Chinese warriors used to hike across vast countryside and when they became exhausted , they knelt down to rest and placed pressure on acupoint Stomach 36 "Zu San Li". When they arose, they found renewed strength and were able to hike “three more miles"💃💃💃

ST 36 is one of the most common and miraculous of acupuncture points - if you've had acupuncture with me you've likely had this one needled 🥢

Nourishes qi and blood - great for overall health, energy, immunity and longevity. An earth point on an earth channel - helps us ground and receive nourishment. Excellent for all things digestive - physically, mentally and emotionally.

And extra helpful to stimulate this time of year as we rest and digest any excesses of the festive period, and also energetically digest our 2023 experiences, celebrate the wins, release the sh*t, and recharge before we take in all that 2024 has to offer.

Chinese New Year is 10th Feb this year, when the year of the dragon 🐲 is born! Until then, stay cosy, rest and recharge but start some gentle movement, get outside a bit, sense nature, and softly ponder future possibilities. Energy comes before matter materialises. Though it's still winter, nature is stirring underground so we can allow that energy to slowly stir within us too before we take solid action.

Don't force don't resist ☯️

LOCATION ☝️

4 finger widths below the base of the kneecap and along the outer edge of the shin bone. The muscle should pop out a bit when you flex your foot. It's sometimes tender!

Massage gently for a couple of minutes with a deep and steady pressure - circular or up and down - and feel yourself settling into the earth.

Hope you're having a gentle cosy January!

Happy New Year!!!

I hope you can take some time to REST and DIGEST now the festive fuss is done n dusted 😴

REST...

Taoist philosophy (the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine) teaches us that all aspects of life exist as part of a cyclical balance of Yin and Yang. Winter is the maximum “Yin” phase of nature’s annual cycle - the dark, cold, slow, still, inward, receptive energy.

This time of year we're called to retreat, take stock, examine our depths, befriend the darkness, listen, nourish and simply wait. The days are short and our energy is at it's most limited. Time to tend to your inner reserves. But remember it's not all or nothing - the spot of the yin yang symbol reminds to move and socialise too... Just not very much 😊

DIGEST...

So energetically not the best time to make and put into practice any ambitious new year plans! Take January to digest - not just all the extra food we might have eaten the past few weeks, but maybe the extra people we've spent time with, extra experiences and interactions, all the extra consumption! Or lack of... it can feel depriving at a time when it often looks like everyone else has plenty - people and resources.

It's also a time to digest what's happened to us in 2023 personally and collectively, learn from the past, listen to our hearts, and follow our curiosity... before we start spinning the plates of 2024.

CHINESE NEW YEAR...

Is 10th Feb this year - 2nd new moon after winter solstice - and a way better time to set intentions to burst forth with the strong uprising energy of spring. 2024 is the year of the Yang Green Dragon - I'll share some snippets later in the month.

Until, then rest, nest, digest and allow the seeds of new ideas the time and space to germinate underground enveloped by the wisdom of winter 💫

Happy gentle January!
