🏃 Flight Mode: When Your Body Runs

Suddenly want to avoid a person, task, or situation? That’s flight.

Flight is energy moving away from perceived danger.

You might:
Avoid conflict
Scroll endlessly
Overwork or over-plan
Distract yourself
Your brain says: “Run — safety first.”

Tip:
Notice the urge to escape. Take one tiny step toward the task anyway. Micro-movements beat overwhelm.

Sometimes this might be our emotions... just feeling into them with gentle curiosity can build capacity to sit with them over time. This allows you to choose life, knowing you can handle difficult moments and this builds self trust instead of self abandonment.

Have you ever fled from something you knew you needed to do? 💨 Comment below.

My favourite is to clean and start projects I've been avoiding for ages in a bid to avoid the thing that feels even more overwhelming. I get this sense of acheivement that I've accomplished things... yet I've still taught my nervous system it can't handle it. The best thing is when I acheive all those avoidance side lines and still do the thing that makes me uncomfortable. 🫶

When it is appropriate to act on a fight response?

You’re on solid ground acting on your fight impulse when these conditions are met:

1. There is a real, present, external threat.
Not imagined, not symbolic (what could happen, not what is happening, or your interpretation, not actual violation), not emotional, but genuinely unsafe.

Examples:

•Someone is being harmed.
•A boundary is being crossed.
•Your safety or someone else’s safety is at risk.

In these situations, the fight response is your body saying, “Act. Protect. Intervene.”

2. Your values are clearly being violated and action aligns with them.

The fight response isn’t only about physical danger, it can also arise when:

•An injustice is occurring.
•Your dignity or autonomy is being infringed upon.
•Someone you care about is being mistreated.

If taking action is consistent with your values (e.g., integrity, fairness, courage), then the fight response may be a compass, not a glitch.

3. You have enough regulation to choose how you fight.

This is crucial. “Fight” doesn’t have to look like aggression. It can be:

•Speaking up
•Setting a boundary
•Walking toward a problem, not away from it
•Physically intervening in a dangerous situation
•Saying “No” firmly
•Removing someone from harm

The key is that you’re acting from the fight response, not in it, you’re using its energy, not losing control to it.

4. Action genuinely improves the situation.

A good internal question is:
“If I act now, does it protect, clarify, or restore something? Or does it escalate and harm?”

If action reduces harm or establishes safety, the fight response is doing its job.

⭐ So what’s the real answer?

Your fight response is not the enemy. It’s a tool.
Regulation is not suppression. It’s discernment.
The goal is not to never fight, it’s to know when to fight.

You’re aiming for a sequence like this:
1. Notice the fight response (heat, urgency, anger, activation).
2. Regulate enough to create a small space between impulse and action.
3. Discern: Is this a real threat? Are my values on the line?
4. Act with intention, not reactivity

That space, however small, allows you to use fight energy directly but skillfully.

🔥 Fight Mode: When Your Body Pushes Back

Ever snap, argue, or feel super irritable over small things? That’s your fight response.

Fight happens when your nervous system sends energy OUT.
You feel like you have to push through a threat.

•Short fuse?

•Feeling defensive?

•Wanting to control the situation?

That’s fight. Your brain thinks it’s protecting you.

Notice when you’re in fight mode. Breathe. Pause.
Ask: “Is this really a threat?”

Because unregulated systems don’t create change... they create reactivity.

Better parents → less intergenerational trauma.
Better partners → less domestic harm.
Better colleagues → less abuse of power.
Better drivers → literally fewer deaths.

That is action.

Additional support if you are dealing with PTSD and trauma, using specific hypnotherapy techniques can calm down your nervous system response and bring you some relief.

Or for general help with specific issues I offer Solution Focused Therapy sessions.

Life brings unexpected change, so Capacity can feel limited. This is where our regulation practice comes in, to allow for capacity to grow.

When our Capacity is not yet developed our cup starts to overflow.

Taking things slow, letting our nervous system catch up, finding balance and then stretching ourselves to a new level of capacity is the kindest most authentic way to create a life of presence and joy.

This is why reflexology and hypnotherapy support growth. They allow for nervous system regulation and over time, bigger capacity.

Allowing a fuller, more wholesome life to unfold over time.

If your cup has felt full lately, reflexology and hypnotherapy can help you settle again.

Evidence from clinical studies shows reflexology is associated with improvements in stress, sleep, fatigue, and overall menopausal symptoms. Supporting regulation in the nervous system can meaningfully influence comfort, resilience, and wellbeing during hormonal transition.

As with many supportive therapies, individual experience varies, and benefits are often felt cumulatively over time.
