⚡️HEADACHES⚡️

Headaches can be a real pain (excuse the pun) but understanding what causes and contributes to them can help to manage them.

⚡️Tension - mild/moderate pain in a tight ‘band’ around the top of the head and behind the eyes.

⚡️Migraines - recurrent headaches with visual and/or GI disturbances. Normally sensitive to light and/or sound. Can get vertigo/dizziness. Some have prodromal symptoms that come before the headache. Visual aura can include tunnel vision, spots of visual loss and teichopsia (zig-zag lines).
Many people identify triggers like stress, over or under-sleeping and certain foods (choc, red wine).
CAUSE - not entirely clear, but thought to be of neurovascular origin

⚡️Cluster - recurrent episodes of excruciating pain over one side of head behind the eye. May also have redness/tearing of same eye. Episodes are shorter than migraines (30-90mins) and reoccur several times a day, commonly at night.

⚡️Cervicogenic - steady pain on one side of the head/face which worsens with coughing or sneezing. May also have a stiff neck. Can last a few hours - a day. This is thought to be caused by pain referral from the neck due to the anatomy of nerve convergence in the upper cervical spine (neck). Over time these headaches can become chronic.

⚡️Trigeminal Neuralgia - disruption of the nerve that innervates the face. Symptoms are electric-shock type pain in the face (usually one-sided) and made worse with contact (e.g. brushing teeth). Cause can vary but should be investigated.

⚡️Analgesia-Rebound Headache - headaches that occur from abuse/overuse of painkillers taken for migraine or tension headaches. When taking the analgesics is stopped, a headache is experienced. This can develop into chronic daily headaches.

🚩RED FLAGS - sudden onset of extreme pain; pupil changes e.g. pupil symmetry; confusion or speech problems, body weakness or loss of coordination; seizures; other systemic symptoms like a fever; thunderclap headache

This is not personal medical advice so please seek medical advice if you have any worries about headaches!

Another FAQ - "how do you treat people?"

Hands-on treatment, combined with exercise prescription and advice, aims to get you back to functional and pain-free movement.

Here are the main techniques used in practice to give you some idea of what this treatment typically involves:

Please note: this is not an extensive list. Acupuncture is not described in this post but is commonly provided with treatment where appropriate. Acupuncture will be discussed in a future post of its own!

A common concern for people new to osteopathy - is an osteopath experienced enough to manage me? It's healthy to question the experience or qualification of your healthcare providers!

Here are a few reasons why you can trust your osteopath with your health.

Osteopaths are trained to screen for many conditions that are not within our remit, in order to refer you to the right place. Our thorough assessment ensures you are fit to receive the treatment we propose.

You can request your osteopath's registration number with our governing body (General Osteopathic Council), insurance policy and any relevant qualifications or training certificates if you require further reassurance.

A consultation is the best way to decide if osteopathy or a particular practitioner is the right person to manage you. If we don't believe we can help you, or feel your case is not within our area of expertise, we can advise and lead you in the right direction.

FAQ: What can I expect at my appointment?

This is generally for the initial consultation appointment - subsequent appointments will be slightly shorter and will include more treatment and less assessment.

You will be given an estimate of how long and how many treatments recovery is expected to take.
