Have you scanned your ewes yet?

Watch the Barren Rate! 🚩 While a few empty ewes are expected, a barren rate of over 5% is a red flag. If you’re seeing numbers higher than that, it’s time to investigate. It could point to:

Sub-clinical disease (like Enzootic abortion or Toxoplasmosis)

Ram fertility issues

Poor ewe body condition at tupping

When it’s cold, a calf’s energy isn’t just going towards growth – it’s being used simply to maintain their body temperature. Calves less than three weeks old are most vulnerable to temperature drop.

• Increasing the ‘fuel’
o Feed an extra 50g/day of milk replacer for each 5°C temperature drop below 15°C for calves under 3 weeks of age

• Put on a jacket
o Never put a jacket on a wet calf
o Ensure thorough cleaning in between uses

Don’t forget the bedding! The calves legs should be completely covered by straw when lying down to provide a vital layer of insulation
