If you’re a partner reading this and quietly wondering what you’re actually meant to do during labour — you’re not alone.
Many partners worry about getting it wrong, not knowing enough, feeling helpless or feeling like a ‘spare part’. One of the biggest misconceptions about birth support is that partners need to constantly do something. In reality, some of the most powerful support in labour means being still and holding space.
Birth partners don’t need to manage labour — and they certainly don’t need to “fix” it.
Labour is a physiological process. The role of support is to protect the environment around it. That might mean staying calm when things feel intense, helping maintain privacy, or simply offering steady reassurance.
Many partners tell me that before starting my antenatal course they had no real idea what they were meant to be doing — but once they understood the physiology of birth and the importance of their role, everything started to make much more sense.
This is something we explore in depth during my antenatal courses - you can find out the upcoming dates on my website www.thebirthpreparationcompany.co.uk

One of the biggest surprises for many first-time parents is learning that labour doesn’t always progress in neat, predictable patterns.
While guidelines and timelines exist to support safe care across large populations, they can't always reflect the unique way each individual labour unfolds.
Human bodies don’t all work to the same schedule - and variation can still sit well within the range of normal.
Understanding this during pregnancy can help you feel more prepared for the kinds of conversations and decisions that sometimes arise during labour.
Preparation isn’t about controlling birth — it’s about feeling informed, supported and confident - whatever direction things take.
This is something we explore in more depth during my antenatal courses - because understanding what is within the range of normal can make a real difference to how confident you feel heading into birth 🤍
My antenatal courses offer modern, evidence-based and non-judgemental preparation for birth and early parenthood, with a focus on informed decision-making rather than one-size-fits-all advice.
They’re designed for pregnant people AND their partners or supporters, recognising that birth partners play an important role and benefit from feeling prepared, too.
As part of the course, you’ll be added to a WhatsApp group with other expectant parents due around a similar time, allowing space for questions, shared experiences, and ongoing support during and after the sessions.
If you would like realistic, supportive preparation that reflects how the NHS maternity system works in real life (and how to navigate it effectively), you’re in the right place! For more details and course dates please visit my website 🤍

Hello — I’m Andrea.
I’m an NHS community midwife and the founder of The Birth Preparation Company, a small, local, midwife-led service based in Wymondham.
I’ve worked across NHS maternity services for over a decade, and alongside my current NHS role I design and teach antenatal and caesarean preparation courses, offer IBCLC infant feeding support and run a free newborn group for local parents.
My approach is calm, evidence-based and non-judgemental.
I focus on helping parents understand their options and feel more confident — rather than telling anyone what they should do.
Whether you’re expecting a baby and looking for thoughtful, realistic birth preparation or you're looking for infant feeding support, you’re very welcome here 🤍
Early labour — and not really knowing what to expect — was actually what first inspired me to start running my own antenatal courses.
When I was working on a Midwife-Led Birthing Unit, I regularly saw parents arrive at hospital in early labour and then be advised to go home again.
That was always hard — for them and for me.
Trying to explain that being at home was often the better option, and that resting was important at this stage, felt incredibly difficult when someone was already uncomfortable, tired, and convinced that resting was impossible.
What I’ve seen since starting my courses has been so encouraging.
So many of my clients get in touch after their baby is born and tell me that understanding early labour — how it might feel, how to cope at home, and when it’s a good time to head in — helped them feel more confident staying at home for longer.
Early labour can still be hard.
But being prepared for it can make it feel far less frightening and far less confusing 🤍
If you’re expecting a baby and want to feel more prepared, my antenatal courses cover this (as well as plenty more other subjects) in depth, alongside practical coping strategies and realistic preparation for NHS birth.
Details and upcoming dates can be found on my website (link in bio).

The Birth Preparation Company - Midwife led antenatal classes & baby massage
Hello, we are Andrea and Jo, two friends who met whilst studying midwifery at the University of East Anglia. After initially working together in a hospital, Jo now works as a community midwife providing all aspects of midwifery care including antenatal and postnatal clinics, home visits and home births, whilst Andrea remains within a hospital setting where she works in all areas of the maternity department, including the Midwife led birthing unit (MLBU), delivery suite, antenatal clinic, both antenatal and postnatal wards, as well as attending home births. Together, we have had the privilege to support countless women and their partners through their pregnancies, labours and births, as well as providing advice and support through the postnatal period.
Our birth preparation classes have been born out of our frustration of frequently meeting couples whose labour, birth and early days with their new baby did not match their expectations, despite having attended antenatal classes. We believe that women have a much better chance of having a positive birth experience if they are prepared for all eventualities, because when it comes to childbirth, things don’t always go to plan. Therefore, we have decided to create birth preparation classes which would offer honest, relevant and up to date information straight from the horse's mouth - no filter, no fluff!
We offer you birth preparation classes with a difference. Run by experienced practising midwives, our courses are relaxed, open, honest and non-judgmental and include everything you need to know for your labour, birth and early days with your baby.
Classes are small enough to allow interaction and space for asking questions, but large enough to enable you to meet other parents with babies due at similar times, giving you the opportunity to create a support network and potentially friends for the years to come.
As well as being a midwife, Andrea is also an IAIM certified baby massage instructor. The International Association of Infant Massage (IAIM) is the largest and longest standing worldwide association solely dedicated to baby massage. Originally founded in the early 1980s, the IAIM became an internationally established organisation in 1992.
Our baby massage courses offer a wonderful opportunity for you to learn how to communicate with your baby through nurturing touch in a relaxed and welcoming environment as well as a great opportunity to get out and socialise with other parents and babies.
In addition to helping you and your baby bond, regular massage may:
Soothe your baby and reduce crying
Aid digestion and help relieve colic, gas and constipation
Help your baby’s adjustment to night time sleep, and help your baby sleep more deeply
Relieve nasal congestion, teething discomfort and growing pains
Boost your baby’s immune system
Improve circulatory and endocrine systems
Help calm and relax both you and your baby
The classes are baby led, so you don’t need to worry if the class coincides with your baby’s sleep or feeding times. Spare dolls are available to practice on if your baby is sleeping.
