Eligibility criteria are standards or guidelines which outline who can participate in clinical studies ✅❌

Every trial has different criteria. These criteria are used by researchers to help them decide who may benefit from a new treatment and who can take part in the clinical trial. These are called inclusion criteria.

However, it is also important that a trial excludes people for whom the new treatment might not be safe or appropriate (exclusion criteria), such as pregnant women or those who are trying to get pregnant. Exclusion criteria are also based on things like age, gender, previous treatment history and other medical conditions.

Flu season is here - time to roll up your sleeve! 🦠💉

As flu season sets in, now’s the moment to get protected. The annual flu jab helps reduce the spread of illness, keeps essential services running, and protects the most vulnerable in our communities.

At the MEU, we’re proud to be part of ongoing research that helps make vaccines more effective and long-lasting. Each trial brings us closer to improving how we prevent flu and other infectious diseases in the future.

By getting your flu jab this season, you’re not just looking after yourself, you’re contributing to the bigger picture of community health and resilience.

If you have a long-term health condition, the flu vaccine helps protect you from getting seriously ill.

An update on our charity cyclists!

Last week a team from the Medicines Evaluation Unit, an IQVIA business, The University of Manchester, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and Asthma + Lung UK set off on an incredible journey from Wythenshawe to Amsterdam to raise funds for vital respiratory research.

Their route took them through the Peak District, across to Hull for the overnight ferry to Rotterdam, and then up through the Netherlands before arriving triumphantly in Amsterdam.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated and supported the team along the way - your generosity is helping to drive life-changing research.

So… who’s up for the next challenge? 😉

Fantastic news in the world of research!

Recent gene therapy studies for Huntington’s disease have shown strong signs of effectiveness, with evidence suggesting that it has the potential to slow progression of the disease by up to 75%.

Huntington’s shares features with dementia, Parkinson’s, and motor neurone disease (MND), and is usually fatal within 20 years of symptom onset. Until now, there has been no effective treatment.

This milestone represents a powerful step forward in the fight against a condition that has long challenged patients, families, and researchers.

One of the most devastating diseases finally has a treatment that can slow its progression and transform lives, tearful doctors tell BBC.

On 23 September, Professor Dave Singh and Dr Gussie Beech will set off from our HQ in Wythenshawe, cycling all the way to Amsterdam for the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress.

Once they arrive at ERS, they’ll join other leaders in respiratory research to present and discuss ground-breaking science.

They’re taking on this challenge alongside colleagues from The University of Manchester, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and Asthma + Lung UK - raising funds for Asthma + Lung UK, the only UK charity fighting for everyone’s right to breathe.

Why research like this matters:
- 43,000 early deaths each year in the UK are linked to air pollution.
- 1 in 5 people will develop a lung condition in their lifetime.
- 5.4 million people in the UK are living with asthma 1.7 million people with COPD (not including those that go undiagnosed).

Every pound raised will take us a step closer to a world where everyone has healthy lungs. Let’s cheer them on as they cycle to Amsterdam for this incredible cause!
