Your upper traps aren’t just “tight.”
They’re usually compensating.

The trapezius has three parts:

• Upper fibres – elevate the shoulders (often overactive)
• Middle fibres – retract and stabilise the scapula
• Lower fibres – depress and assist upward rotation (often underactive)

When the lower and middle fibres aren’t doing their job, the upper traps pick up the slack.

That’s when tension builds.
That’s when neck stiffness creeps in.
That’s when shoulders feel constantly loaded.

Soft tissue work can help temporarily.
But long-term change comes from restoring strength and scapular control.

Release what’s overactive.
Strengthen what’s underactive.
Retrain the pattern.

These exercises are commonly used to:
• Improve shoulder control
• Build rotator cuff and scapular strength
• Support long-term shoulder function
• Reduce flare-ups during daily activity and training

Every shoulder injury is different, so exercises, load, and progressions should always be individualised.
