Great campaign by the Institute of Osteopathy. Our whole body approach is used to assess the ‘why you are attending your osteopathy session’ and is nearly always more than just the pain or dysfunction you are presenting with.

It's Day 4 of World Osteopathic Healthcare Week!

Osteopathy for every person: for all ages and stages of life

Osteopathic health care is for every person, for all ages and stages of life. This is being reflected in Research being conducted in various areas. Osteopathy aims to improve the person’s overall wellbeing, considering the biological, sociological, psychological and spiritual needs of people as part of their local communities as well as addressing health globally.

Osteopathic professionals provide care, input and advice across a range of sectors including advisory roles in the fields of government, international health, sports, education, rehabilitation, occupational health, safety and ergonomic design and not just individual health care.

Osteopaths and osteopathic physicians generally deliver multifactorial, complex interventions as a package of care. This fits with the growing demand from international health agendas.

It's Day 3 of World Osteopathic Healthcare Week!

Research and evidence-based practices.

There are more and more osteopathic professionals pursuing academic degrees and involvement in research in the last ten years.

Students are growing into research and evidence-based practice as a vital part of their education as in all healthcare studies. This prepares the students for interprofessional work and research.

In the United States, osteopathic physicians are easily involved in academic research due to the nature of their education.

Outside the U.S. there are several PhDs specifically as an osteopath but usually, osteopaths pursue professionals specifically (UCO) PhDs in various specialities such as neurology, psychology, person-centred care and so on.

WOHW, Day 2, part 1:

Collaboration through research: introduction to NCOR and DO-Touch.net

This slide introduces to you several national and international organisations that produce, promote and disseminate research to underpin quality outcomes in evidence-based health care.

The National Council for Osteopathic Research was established in 2003 to provide leadership and unity in osteopathic research development. NCOR aims to improve the osteopathic evidence base using different means including providing strategic leadership and collaboration, engagement and education, communication, development and sustainability.

DO-Touch.NET is a practice-based research network, launched in 2010, whose clinician members are dedicated to assessing the clinical usefulness of osteopathic manipulative medicine. Its mission is to evaluate and advance the practice of osteopathic manipulative medicine. Through a global network of clinicians, DO-Touch.NET aims to produce research that translates easily into practice.

From the beginning, osteopathic professionals were curious to obtain a deeper understanding of how manual therapy affects the human physiology and how that translated to peoples’ health and their perceptions of pain and discomfort.
This is how the research culture became imbedded in the osteopathic community.
Research needs to be disseminated. This too has a long history. The Journal of Osteopathic Medicine (JOM) was founded in Sentember 1901

The importance of staying active
Deconditioning, caused by inactivity, is what we need to watch out for so we can nip it in the bud early.
We’ve all heard this before: "Use it or lose it"

When people become less active, they grow more prone to metabolic conditions. If you become overweight, that may lead to diabetes, a heart condition or high blood pressure, which puts you at risk of stroke. So if getting up from the sofa feels harder, rather than rely more on remote controls and riser chairs, see it as a call to action to build strength.
We're adding to our decline by making things easier for ourselves.

Physical changes are inevitable with age, but exercise and a healthy diet can minimise their impact. Muscles will naturally lose some of their bulk and there is a slowing of how bone and tissue are built or maintained.

Next: Where to start?

The importance of staying active
It’s important to distinguish between what is the natural ageing process and less natural ageing, with increased disability. The slow change in our bodies won’t necessarily render us frail and immobile if we take care of ourselves and there is plenty we can do to help. How to age better inside and out. One way is to do some exercise every day
