Are you struggling after choosing to end your pregnancy?

Many people do not experience any after-effects after they have had a termination. But some people, even those who least expected to feel that way, do experience feelings of sadness, grief, loss or regret. This can take you by surprise and be particularly difficult to deal with due to its unexpectedness and the fact that you may not have told many people about the abortion, or feel comfortable sharing this with them now.

It is quite common to have unexpected reactions and emotions after an abortion. These can occur within hours or surface weeks or months later, and can include sadness, depression, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, low self-esteem, emotional numbing and re-living the pregnancy, the decision, the abortion in recurring thoughts, dreams or flashbacks.

How you feel after an abortion is unique - there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to feel. Christmas can be an incredibly difficult time of year for many. If you are going through a complicated pregnancy, have lost a baby or (for one of many different reasons) you made a decision to end your pregnancy the expectation to be merry and grateful can be overwhelming.

No matter what your situation, it's important that you don't put pressure on yourself. No one can tell you how you should or shouldn't be feeling.

A few years ago a midwife from the charity Tommy's shared her tips for taking care of yourself if Christmas was going to be difficult. They are worth a look, many have found them very helpful.

You can see her tips by clicking this link - https://www.tommys.org/our-organisation/about-us/charity-news/coping-christmas-when-you-have-lost-baby?f24_pid=2b6ac5c0-5ae0-40e7-9b7f-ef689719e271&utm_campaign=Copy%20Of%20Christmas%202017&utm_source=force24&utm_medium=email&utm_content=textlink
