When Fahema Rewiha moved from Egypt to the UK in 2024, she brought with her years of nursing experience, valuable skills, and a passion for helping others. But like many people starting a new life in a new country, her early weeks were filled with uncertainty.

To find her footing, Fahema applied to volunteer at Musgrove Park Hospital, a decision she now describes as “the first step that completely changed my career path.” With the support of volunteer manager Sarah, she quickly rediscovered how much she missed hands on care and being part of a clinical team.

Encouraged to keep going, Fahema joined the Sector-Based Work Academy Programme and the Volunteer to Career pathway. She rebuilt her confidence, refreshed her clinical skills, and even achieved her venepuncture certification after shadowing the phlebotomy team.

When she felt ready to apply for an NHS role, Fahema went for it and was offered a healthcare assistant post.

Fahema now hopes her story inspires others taking their first steps: “With support and belief in yourself, it truly is possible to move forward. My future plan is to continue my nursing career by preparing to take the UK registration exams to become a fully qualified registered nurse.”

Please join us in congratulating Fahema as she begins her new role this week. We’re delighted to welcome her to the team. 💙

introduction

Hi everyone,

My name is Sam Bracher and I am the Youth Volunteer Coordinator at Yeovil District Hospital,

Working with young people and enabling them to acheive thier potential is a huge passion of mine, and it is an absolute privilege to be able to carry out this work here at YDH.

We have been lucky enough to have recieved funding from the PEARS foundation in order to run a youth volunteering scheme (more information via link below) and I am currently working with local schools, colleges, youth groups and staff here at the hospital to set up and run 8 week programs over the year for young volunteers to come on board. Not only to give assistance in many areas of the hospital, but also gain an enormous amount of new life long skills by volunteering here at YDH.
