Four challenges people can face when living with a learning disability
At You Care & We Care Support Services, we see the barriers that people with learning disabilities (and their families/carers) can face every day. These are just four of the challenges that often come up:
1) Moving between services
Each year, many young people transition from children’s services to adult learning disability services. That change often around age 18, can feel overwhelming, and it can be difficult to access the right support at the right time.
2) Services closing / reduced support
With ongoing pressures on local authority budgets, fewer people are benefiting from respite care and carer breaks than in previous years, making it even harder for families and carers to get the rest and support they need.
3) Social life and community connection
Social interaction matters. Feeling part of the community, building friendships, and having meaningful activities can make a huge difference to wellbeing and confidence. (Mental health needs can also be more common for people with a learning disability, so connection and routine are vital.)
4) Accessible communication & inclusive healthcare
Everyone deserves information they can understand. Yet Healthwatch found 28% of people with communication needs said they were refused help when asking for accessible healthcare information.
These are some of the issues the people we support can find difficult and we want you to know this: we will always put you first. We’ll keep working alongside you to break down barriers, build confidence, and make sure your voice is heard.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. 💙
