Four challenges people can face when living with a learning disability

At You Care & We Care Support Services, we see the barriers that people with learning disabilities (and their families/carers) can face every day. These are just four of the challenges that often come up:

1) Moving between services
Each year, many young people transition from children’s services to adult learning disability services. That change often around age 18, can feel overwhelming, and it can be difficult to access the right support at the right time.

2) Services closing / reduced support
With ongoing pressures on local authority budgets, fewer people are benefiting from respite care and carer breaks than in previous years, making it even harder for families and carers to get the rest and support they need.

3) Social life and community connection
Social interaction matters. Feeling part of the community, building friendships, and having meaningful activities can make a huge difference to wellbeing and confidence. (Mental health needs can also be more common for people with a learning disability, so connection and routine are vital.)

4) Accessible communication & inclusive healthcare
Everyone deserves information they can understand. Yet Healthwatch found 28% of people with communication needs said they were refused help when asking for accessible healthcare information.

These are some of the issues the people we support can find difficult and we want you to know this: we will always put you first. We’ll keep working alongside you to break down barriers, build confidence, and make sure your voice is heard.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. 💙

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that can affect how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them. Many autistic people also experience differences in sensory processing, which can make everyday sounds, textures, smells, or busy environments feel overwhelming.

That’s why sensory activities can be so helpful. Done in the right way, they can support regulation, reduce anxiety, and improve overall wellbeing.

Benefits of sensory activities for autism
Sensory differences are common for autistic individuals. Someone may be more sensitive (hypersensitive) or less sensitive (hyposensitive) to things like sound, touch, taste, smells, lights, or movement.

For example:

Loud noises like a vacuum cleaner or motorbike may feel intense or distressing
Certain fabrics may feel scratchy, tight, or uncomfortable
Strong smells or particular tastes may make some foods hard to tolerate
Sensory activities can help by:

Improving self-regulation (managing emotions, behaviour, and reactions)
Reducing anxiety and stress by providing predictability, comfort, and a sense of control
Increasing focus and attention, especially when someone is feeling unsettled or distracted
Supporting social interaction, as group sensory activities can create shared experiences and opportunities to practise communication skills

🎨 Clay Adventures: A Little Mess, a Lot of Fun! 🥳

Oh no! It looks like we’ve created a bit of a mess, but that means we’re having a blast! We’re excited to introduce our new and improved clay wheel, and it was wonderful to see the people we support trying it for the very first time! 🌟✨

Today was all about learning new skills while getting creative with clay. We may have had some spills along the way, but that just means we’re exploring and having fun! 👐🖌️

Here’s to more creative messes and fantastic creations ahead!

🌟 Exciting News: Our Own Paid Market Stall! 🌟

This year, we’re thrilled to embark on a new journey: building our very own paid market stall! The amazing individuals we support will take charge, learning valuable skills and earning money to treat themselves! 🎉💰

Instead of traditional volunteering, we’re focused on nurturing their abilities and showing that hard work truly pays off. They’ve been busy crafting fantastic tie-dye T-shirts to sell, and we can’t wait to unveil even more creations in the coming weeks!

And yes, you heard that right—they’ll keep the profits and decide together how to treat themselves as a group! 🛍️✨

🌟 Celebrating Growth with Our Friends at SAPS! 🌟

We've had an amazing time reconnecting with our friends at the weekly SAPS group session in Yeovil! Every Wednesday, we come together to support individuals with diverse needs, and it’s evident how much everyone enjoys these sessions! 🙌❤️

We’ve seen some incredible improvements, even just in the confidence of walking through the door. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved for providing these valuable opportunities each week. Together, we’re making a difference!

🍕 Pizza Party Time! 🍕

Last year, the people we support had a blast learning how to make their own pizzas, and by popular demand, we brought it back! 🎉 Huge congratulations to everyone who joined in and crafted a delicious pizza for lunch. Your hard work truly paid off, and those pizzas looked and smelled amazing! 🤤👏

It’s such a joy to see everyone having fun while learning new skills. Can't wait for our next culinary adventure!

✨ We’re absolutely delighted to share some wonderful news! ✨

We recently had a two-day independent inspection carried out by an external company — and we’re so proud to announce that we achieved an overall rating of GOOD in all five areas, in line with the new CQC assessment framework! 👏🎉

Although our Day Services & Outreach Support are not currently required to be registered under CQC regulations, we firmly believe in holding ourselves to those standards anyway. Ensuring we meet these expectations means the people we support continue to receive the safe, high-quality, and person-centred service they deserve. 💙

This outcome truly reflects the dedication, compassion, and hard work our team puts in every single day. We don’t aim for quality because we have to — we do it because we care.

But we’re not stopping here… 🚀

Next goal: OUTSTANDING! 🌟

Over the next year, we’ll be working even harder to strengthen and develop our services before inviting our independent inspectors back. Achieving “Outstanding” would be an incredible milestone — not just for us, but for the amazing people we support.

Thank you to our brilliant team, our supporters, and the individuals and families who trust us every day. This achievement belongs to all of you. 💙
Onwards and upwards! 💪✨

We support people to embrace life & encourage to learn new skills and put a smile on their face.
