Ashtanga for Beginners 🌿
A clear, supportive, and accessible introduction to the Ashtanga method.
Instead of diving straight into the full Primary Series, we take time to break down key postures, breathing techniques (ujjayi), and transitions — helping you build confidence, strength, and understanding at your own pace.

What makes this approach different?
We keep the integrity of the tradition while making it approachable and sustainable. You’ll learn why we move the way we do, not just how.

Perfect for complete beginners or anyone wanting to revisit the foundations of Ashtanga.
✨ Build awareness. Move with purpose. Grow with ease.

It would be really helpful if you do have preferential days and times to practice in either of those locations, to let me know.

Our latest blog post comes from one of our dedicated community members here in York, Ellie Bye, and is titled:
Yoga Through Motherhood: Finding Balance on the Mat and in Life.

Ellie has written a great piece and will strike a cord with many women juggling motherhood and a dedicated yoga practice, here’s an excerpt from the article,

Why Yoga Becomes Even More Essential in Motherhood
Postpartum, the practice becomes something new again—gentle, deeply healing and often surprisingly emotional. In those early months, yoga supported my recovery in so many ways. Breathwork and gentle movement helped rebuild strength in my pelvic floor and core, soothed the tension from holding and feeding my baby, and gave me tiny windows of calm and clarity amid hectic days and sleepless nights.
As my strength returned, so did a more dynamic practice—and I found that motherhood had made me stronger, not just physically but emotionally too.
Most importantly, yoga taught me how to pause. To breathe through the tantrums. To stay present during 3am feeds. To soften into the unknown. These small, quiet victories on and off the mat are what carried me through.
Reclaiming the Mat: A Postpartum Return
The early stages of postpartum are sacred. Your body has just carried life—it deserves tenderness, patience and reverence. There’s no need to “bounce back” or rush into strong asana. Instead, begin gently. Pelvic floor work, breath awareness and mindful movement are enough. Truly.
As you regain strength and your energy shifts, you’ll know when to begin exploring more. You might not return to the exact version of your pre-pregnancy practice, but you’ll uncover a deeper, more attuned one.

We have a new Ashtanga Vinyasa class starting this Friday in York 9.30 - 11.00am.

Here’s a short piece on what Ashtanga yoga is and what to expect in this class….

Ashtanga Sanskrit counted classes are traditional classes that follow the Ashtanga Yoga method, using Sanskrit count to lead students through a set sequence of postures. In these classes, the teacher recites the Sanskrit vinyasa count, a numerical and verbal guide that links breath with movement, rather than offering detailed alignment cues or modifications. This structured approach helps practitioners develop a rhythmic flow, maintain focus, and internalize the specific number of breaths and movements within the Ashtanga sequence. The pace of a counted class is usually consistent, so it can feel challenging, especially for beginners or those not accustomed to the method, but it can also deepen one’s practice by building mental focus, discipline, and physical endurance.

The use of Sanskrit in counted classes provides a connection to the roots of Ashtanga Yoga, honoring its cultural and spiritual heritage. Hearing and repeating the vinyasa count allows students to become familiar with traditional terms, fostering a more immersive experience that aligns them with Ashtanga’s lineage. Counted classes are often reserved for more experienced students or those familiar with the sequence, as they require a solid foundation and knowledge of the practice. By regularly attending these classes, students refine their understanding of the Ashtanga series, improve their breath control, and deepen their connection to the method, creating a powerful moving meditation that cultivates both mental clarity and physical strength.

We have a new led Ashtanga primary series class starting Friday 10th January 9.30-11.00 in York.

If you’re not familiar with Ashtanga yoga here’s a brief introduction to this style:

Ashtanga Sanskrit counted classes are traditional classes that follow the Ashtanga Yoga method, using Sanskrit count to lead students through a set sequence of postures. In these classes, the teacher recites the Sanskrit vinyasa count, a numerical and verbal guide that links breath with movement, rather than offering detailed alignment cues or modifications. This structured approach helps practitioners develop a rhythmic flow, maintain focus, and internalise the specific number of breaths and movements within the Ashtanga sequence. The pace of a counted class is usually consistent, so it can feel challenging, especially for beginners or those not accustomed to the method, but it can also deepen one’s practice by building mental focus, discipline, and physical endurance.

This class will be suitable for new and experienced practitioners alike. We’ll begin with a half primary series.
