LifeScrum, the framework supporting brilliant women to create sustainable success in business and career, is changing!

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆. 𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗲𝘄?

So....here's your annual reminder that you don't need to go through your periods subscribing to the societal conditioning that tells us 1 of 2 conflicting points of view depending on what Industry needs to sell:

1. Sitting on the sofa, with a hot water bottle, stuffing your face with chocolate, clutching your tummy in agony whilst Bridget Jones falls down a Fireman's pole with her arse out ( love that film, by the way 😁)

2. 'Beating' your period, overcoming it, seeing it as the unacceptably limiting thing it is that you just need to overcome to live life normally and continuing running/exercising/pushing your body to its limits.
Here's the crutch....

Both of these things are actually not the best way to self care, nourishment and indeed, personal effectiveness during your period. Buckle up for 2 mins- here's what we need to be aware of:
🩸Your period is an INFLAMMATORY response. Therefore, if you stuff your gob with highly sugary foods continually in the name of 'self care' during your period, you'll lose your focus, probably feel like crap, have no energy oh, and prevent your hormones doing what they need to do to prep for your next cycle ( also take note if you're perimenopausal). Equally, if your period is so painful that you cannot undertake light exercise, it's worth exploring.

🩸Your body is not designed to run a million processes at once ( I mean, it's really, REALLY good at multitasking don't get me wrong) but if you use ALL your energy on 'overcoming' your period, the important inflammatory processes your body needs to go through gets disturbed. The result? you'll probably feel exhausted and achey, you'll probably crave carbs foods and, you'll be impacting the ability of your body to regulate the nervous system....which can impact your hormone levels in the next few cycles. Yup, what you do this cycle affects future cycles!
😩 I can hear you 'Oh great, thanks, Em, another person telling us that basically we can't live our lives'...
Not at all. Eat the chocolate. Do the Exercise. BUT, be MINDFUL that your body is going through a MASSIVE inflammatory response.
If you have symptoms during your cycle ( or, well, even if you don't!) it's worth thinking about how you can align your wellbeing/nutrition/activities/goals and exercise to your natural rhythms.
And no, it's not a nice to have you know- numerous studies show the important of aligning to your cycle, being hormonally aware and taking a more cyclical approach to female wellbeing, effectiveness and achievement.

⏳ The Time/Happiness trade off….

Is of course, a dichotomy many of us face on a regular basis!

Recent studies show us, in particular, that women who focus solely on ‘time’ rather than ‘energy’ and their natural bodily rhythms are more likely to be stressed, burned out, achey and, less likely to motivate themselves through goals (studies in comments) 📰

🤦‍♀️ For too long, as women, we’ve traded out ‘time’- believing the myth that our productivity/ achievement is linked to how much time we spend on something- how BUSY we are.

Perhaps you’re caught in the ‘busy for busy sake’ trap?

Do you say things like ‘I thrive on being busy’ or, ‘ I’m back to back today’ - do you feel a sense of importance? Perhaps annoyance that others don’t understand how busy you are? Or maybe you feel a general state of dis-ease, overwhelm? Perhaps those lifetime ambitions are sitting on a pile somewhere whilst you run around being busy?

📆 It’s totally ok, by the way- it’s what we’ve been socialised to do- to be ‘overly’ productive (and there’s so so many reasons we do this!!)

🤕But the problem, with that, brilliant woman, is that by constantly being ‘on it’ and ignoring our natural ebb and flow, we never give ourselves the chance to rest, recuperate, be creative, or even to take the time realise our larger goals…

We’re going to use this info to plan a week that aligns your energy and your goals/activities so that you can take back control of your body, and indeed, your time….

💞 Hearts just aren’t going to cut it, are they?!

Many of us (especially those of us in female centred businesses) will be posting given it’s . We know we have far to go into terms of equity in the workplace and general equality.
❓I wonder, though, how many of us have actually been into the website and explored? Or are we posting simply because it’s a convenient day for some bandwagoning exposure?
📚I had a really interesting chat with a very close friend who works in an extremely male dominated industry (they can count using fingers the number of senior women in this particular trade in the UK).

Her thoughts were compelling when viewing the site - ‘what does this mean for me? There is no representation for me on that website’.
🤔 Her thoughts were this- she doesn’t resonate with women (and male allies) on a website, looking very very feminine, making heart gestures with their hands.
Everyday, she battles with casual misogyny, belittlement, rudeness and comments like ‘ I need to speak to a man as they know more about this subject’.

🔵Sometimes, she chooses ‘banter’ (which we’re told isn’t acceptable but to her, it establishes her as part of relationship building- rightly or wrongly)

🔴Sometimes, she chooses to ignore (because if she doesn’t, and constantly fought, she’d never get her job done)

⚪️Sometimes, she sternly proclaims something isn’t acceptable (because sometimes it’s too far)

🔵And sometimes, she comes home, we go for wine, and she moans about how people perceive her as a woman in such an industry, and then we laugh about the ridiculousness of it.

Simply put, I believe we need to start seeing campaigns with REAL women, you know, not the stick thin, corporate baddass women and smiley smiley people- we need to see the women as they’ve stepped off fixing a plane, or muddy from a trial in the Military, or fixing a car, putting out a fire, being the only women in the boardroom, because not all of us are standing on podiums in front of hundreds of people everyday….

…what we arguably don’t need, is pictures of people we can’t resonate with because they’re smiling and making weird little heart gestures!

🏋️‍♀️ So, I’m afraid I won’t be posting uplifting, inspirational quotes, neither will I be jumping on the bandwagon of the pink hearts and love brigade.

But, I’ll be celebrating the brilliant, everyday women who aren’t just vying for a seat in a corporate boardroom- but are out there, everyday, battling everyday obstacles just to get their job done…. let alone conversations about pay and flexible working.

🤩All this said, one thing I will tirelessly campaign for is the better knowledge of our own bodies as women, and how our limited knowledge of our natural bodily (and hormonal) patterns is causing many of us to feel burned out, tired, demotivated and overwhelmed- needlessly- when all we need to do is slightly reconsider our wellbeing practices, and align our ways of working with our body’s needs.

That for me, is also a means of bringing equality!

'Tis a wee bit of a drab Monday and on a drab day, I love a bit of mind mapping for new courses I can create!

Today, I've crafted a new mini series for brilliant women who perhaps haven't come across working with their hormones for a sustainable approach to success before.
