💧 **The Benefits of High Water Content Foods in Dementia Care** 💧

Hydration plays a vital role in supporting wellbeing for people living with dementia, yet it’s often overlooked. As dementia progresses, individuals may forget to drink, struggle to recognise thirst, or simply lose interest in fluids. This can increase the risk of dehydration, which may worsen confusion, fatigue, and agitation.

One simple and effective way to support hydration is through **high water content foods** 💚

🍉 **Why they matter:**
• Help maintain hydration when drinking is reduced
• Can be easier and more appealing than fluids alone
• Support brain function and may help reduce confusion linked to dehydration
• Contribute to overall nutrition, not just hydration

🥒 **Great high-water foods to include:**
• Watermelon, melon, grapes and oranges
• Cucumber, tomatoes and celery
• Yogurt, custard and rice pudding
• Soups, stews and casseroles
• Jelly, smoothies and milkshakes

💡 Even small amounts throughout the day can make a big difference. Offering familiar, favourite foods with high water content can gently support both nutrition and hydration without pressure.

👥 In dementia care, every sip and every bite counts – and hydration doesn’t always have to come from a glass.

Getting someone living with dementia ready for the day can sometimes feel a bit tricky, but a few small changes can make mornings much calmer and more positive for everyone 💙

Here are some friendly little tips that might help:

• Keep things familiar
Doing things in the same order each day can really help reduce confusion and make mornings feel safer.

• Lay clothes out simply
Try placing clothes out in the order they go on.

• Give plenty of time
No need to rush—slow, calm mornings often go much more smoothly.

• One step at a time
Simple instructions like “Let’s put your jumper on” are easier to process than lots of information at once.

• Encourage, don’t take over
Even if it takes longer, letting the person do what they can helps confidence and independence.

• A gentle nudge helps
Sometimes a soft reminder or reassurance is all that’s needed.

• Stay calm and reassuring
Your mood can set the tone for the whole morning—kindness and patience go a long way.

Every day is different, and that’s absolutely okay. It’s about finding what works for you both and focusing on those small wins 💙

At our Osbaldwick day club today we enjoyed a reminiscence session ahead of Titanic Remembrance Day.

We reflected on the story of the RMS Titanic sinking through conversation, photographs, and shared memories, alongside a Titanic-themed lunch and activities.

A lovely, thoughtful session full of stories, connection, and reflection on history.

World Parkinson’s Day was yesterday—a moment to raise awareness, but also to reflect on the everyday realities many people and families are navigating.

For some, Parkinson’s doesn’t come alone. Changes in memory, thinking, and confidence can become part of the journey too. That’s why the right support isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

At our day clubs, "living well" is at the heart of everything we do. Through routine, meaningful activity, laughter, and companionship, we help our members feel valued, understood, and connected.

💙PINCH ME - It's Not What You Think!💙

In dementia care, "PINCH ME" isn't just a saying- it's a vital reminder for carers and professionals to check for simple, treatable causes when someone's behaviour or confusion changes.

Each letter stands for something to check:

💛P -Pain
🦠I- Infection
🥗N -Nutrition
🚽C -Constipation
💧H -Hydration
💊M -Medication
🏡E -Environment

Sometimes a small change- like a glass of water, a calm space, or checking for discomfort - can make a big difference.

A quick PINCH ME check can help find the cause and get the right support sooner. At our day clubs, we know that every change tells a story- and by using PINCH ME, we make sure that every person feels seen, heard, and cared for.🌿
