Our approach to fixing ITB Syndrome
Lateral knee pain or ITB syndrome can be a complex injury yet is one of the most common injuries to sustain, especially if you are a runner.
Here’s what should be considered in your rehabilitation plan:
1. Gait pattern and orthotics
2. Reduce training volume or intensity
3. Hip and core strength
4. Develop range of motion in key areas such as the hip, knee and ankle
5. After the injury has settled, gradually re-apply load and typical motion patterns to the knee before returning to sport.

With the Yorkshire Marathon approaching, I thought I’d share a few tips to the landing and de-loading aspect of a run which can go a long way to either reduce impact (perfect for current injuries or recovering back to running) or improve speed (looking to achieve quicker times).

Here are just a couple of examples which showcase how landing zones can dictate how you will inevitably run and handle the forces placed upon you.

1. Topical at the moment is the need for a HEEL STRIKE ACTION

This action requires smaller and more repetitive steps which appears to look like a little shuffle.

It offloads the calf complex and can protect injuries around the knee due to the knee not extending too much under load.

Best paired with higher cadence such as 180 steps per minute.

While 180 spm may not be a true target for everybody, it’s a nice reference point and you should experience less force going through your joints.

2. MID-FOREFOOT ACTION

For optimal performance, you can consider focusing on landing on your mid foot and aim to contact the calf during the de-loading and loading parts to reduce ground force reaction (Contact time of the foot on the ground) and optimise forwards propulsion. Inevitably meaning you’re moving forward more often with more force.

However, because this action overloads the calf muscles, if you haven’t prepped your body sufficiently you may experience an early onset of fatigue.

Illinois agility run
The Illinois agility run is a great test to apply to sport players particularly around preseason or post-injury to understand their readiness to perform; aka a fitness test.
🏟 Best done in the players actual setting such as on a grass pitch with football boots to build a familiarity.
⏰ It’s all about going against the clock and sparking our competitive nature a little. See how they rate against the normative data to see if they get the call up or playing the left back in the changing room role 😳
