re you in search of that final resting place of an ancestor within Yorkshire and beyond? My name is Tee and I am your genealogist, writer, and grave hunter here at THE DEAD SLEUTH. THE DEAD SLEUTH is a registered company located in the City of York offering professional genealogical services for those looking to solve the riddles and absurdities of their own family history. With access to a wealth of local repositories and archives throughout York, Yorkshire and beyond – I work with those who need an experienced and dedicated history sleuth by their side as they embark on a fascinating journey to uncover the lives of their ancestors. From genealogical advice, family history research, probate transcription, archive retrieval, to photography, lineage reports and ancestral storytelling – THE DEAD SLEUTH offers a rich menu of research services. And as every research commission is as unique as the person who is requesting it – I offer a FREE initial thirty minute consultation to ensure that I am the perfect sleuth for my client. THE DEAD SLEUTH also offers bespoke ancestral tours for visitors who are curious about understanding their family history in the context of location and would love to walk in the footsteps of an ancestor, visit the place they once called home or stand at the foot of their grave in a quiet churchyard. And, if I’m not in search of a missing ancestor or poring over the details on a newly discovered death certificate or trawling through the parish records in search of a burial entry – I’ll be wandering among the tombstones somewhere with notebook and camera in hand. As a enthusiastic taphophile with an interest in tombstone symbolism – I also undertake grave hunts with the use of parish records and newspapers as the location and image capture of the resting place of our ancestors can be a poignant piece of the jigsaw. In the absence of a marked grave I can also research, and photograph the surrounding vicinity in which an ancestor rests. I share the tales and triumphs of family history and of my wanderings among the tombstones in search of the unquiet dead as THE GRAVEYARD SQUIRREL. I am also a public speaker and am happy to chat with eager ears and curious minds about the tales of Victorian criminality, tombstone tourism, sleuthing those elusive ancestors and fallen women. Passionate about the benefits of Ancestral Healing – I also work alongside those who are seeking to understand, reveal and free inherited grief and trauma from their family histories. And with my love of family history, storytelling and Victorian crime – I am the founder of THE POLITE TOURIST which offers unique walks through the unquiet streets of York, Scarboro’, Leeds and beyond. You can find me at the Association of Professional Genealogists, and the Genealogical Speakers Guild. See YOU on the other side?

Within the pages of the APRIL publication of The Yorkshire Dalesman magazine - I muse upon the siren call of serendipty as I sleuth my elusive ancestors who once loved and lived in the historic market town of Malton in North Yorkshire AND a town I once called home.

‘What is this Death? – a quiet of the heart?
The whole of that of which we are a part?' ~ Lord Byron

Firebrand. Exile. Political revolutionary. Epistolary genius. Poet.

During a thunderstorm which raged through Missolonghi in Greece - George Gordon Lord Noel Byron died on April 19 in the year 1824 from the effects of a fever and probable medical incompetence from his earnest doctors.

Mistake! MISTAKE!

On a chilly and dull April day in the year 1965, an attractive and naive young woman was joined in unholy matrimony to a notorious criminal.

The fallout from this lavish and short union between Frances Elsie Shea and one Reginald Kray would leave a trail of devastation in its wake; and the mistake within this betrothal certificate would be the least of it.

A letter packed with tales of ribbons, flying bonnets, a chilly ride home to York on a skittish mare, the gift of ‘Walker’s Sermons’ and a lost glove from the quill of one Lucy Gray in January 1811.

Although the author of this ponderously pious letter begs her recipient’s patience for a ‘shabby epistle’ - MY patience with the transcription has been sore tested.

''Dear and honoured father,
I have the Misfortune to acquaint you that I was convicted the Day before yesterday at the Assizes and am to suffer the 7th of April next for Horse stealing..."

Dear and honoured reader,
I have the fortune to acquaint you that another book has nested upon the shelves of an ever burgeoning library and unlike the gentleman in question - one has yet to suffer for it.

"This Rogue is theirs, and we the honeft Folks.
Of Knaves and Fools, we don’t fay that we have neither,
But Knave and Fool are feldom found together."

Epigram on Turpin, by a Gentleman of York
Stamford Mercury (April 1739)

On this day in the year 1739, a notorious felon by the baptismal name of Richard Turpin from the County of Essex went to the gallows at York Tyburn attired in a smart new frock coat and shoes.

Yet in spite of the ignominy of falling prey to body snatchers necessitating an undignified burial in quick lime; his conviction at the York Assizes for the capital offence of stealing a mare, gelding and foal from one Thomas Creasey would soon pave the way for his arrival into the annals of historical legend with whispers of courageous derring-do and a horse named ‘Black Bess’.

And, the myth which swirls around this rogue of a highwayman the good folk of Essex once claimed as their own is now indelibly entangled, along with the remains of the man himself within the chronicles of the City of York.

Requiesce in pace.
