🤩 Thirsk School A Level Results

Students from Thirsk School and Sixth Form College have been celebrating an extremely strong set of A level results, with students achieving better than expected grades across the board.

A particular success was in our vocational qualifications, with 83% of results being the equivalent of an A or A*.

A quarter of all grades (A level and vocational) were at this high level.

Some notable successes amongst this year’s results were Lydia Broadbent (A\* A\* A) who is off to Durham to read English Literature, Thomas Conacher (A\* A\* A) who is heading to the USA before reading History, Sophie Milton (Distinction\* Distinction A\* A) who is reading Psychology at Leeds and Sophie Hodgson (A\* A\* 😎, who is heading to Sheffield to read Biomedical Sciences…

🏃🏃🏼‍♀️ Celebrations at Sessay Swift Race

The evening of 6th August saw over 90 Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers compete in or support the club’s Sessay Swift 6km race - a one loop, fast and flat road race finishing at Sessay Village Hall.

This was the 13th Sessay Swift, organized by Race Director Duncan Fothergill, and originally set up by Marian Codling.

It was a lovely clear evening with great views of the Kilburn White Horse for anyone marshalling or not with their head down running!

In total, 370 runners took part with the overall male winner, Daniel Cheeseman from Richmond and Zetland Harriers in 18:16 and the overall female winner was Davina Ellis from Harrogate Harriers in 21:33.

61 Harriers completed the run with Tom Levi first back for the club in a time of 19:24, finishing fourth overall. Luke McNiff was second Harrier in 20:34 and Paul Peacock third in 21:51…

🐎 Talented Travellers Succeed at Thirsk

Scottish Raider Paddy The Squire travelled 117 miles down from Carrutherstown, in Dumfries
and Galloway to land the spoils in the feature race on the Thirsk Superhero card last Friday, the Class 3 Join Racing TV run over a distance of 1m4f on the prevailing ground, described as good to firm.

Well supported in the betting, the 5/6 favourite ridden by Andrew Mullin, who served his apprenticeship at the Easterby yard in Malton, and trained by lain Jardine was prominent throughout the race and opened up a margin of five lengths when crossing the line. The Thirsk Rotary Endeavour Award for a Carlton Miniott year 6 pupil was presented at The Leavers Assembly to George Dodd.

George’s name was added to the large commemorative shield and George received a personalized small shield and a £25 book token

🐎 Thirsk Summer Cup Success Qualifies Big Leader for Big-Time

Big Leader justified being sent off the 6/4 favourite in the £15,000 William Hill Summer Cup, run over a distance of one mile at Thirsk last Saturday.

Racing prominently on the outer, Big Leader lived up to his name to cross the winning line a neck in front of his nearest rival, Treble Tee.

Jockey P.J. McDonald reported a quick pace in the race requiring Big Leader to tough it out.

Recording a third successive victory following previous wins at Redcar and Southwell, the three-year-old now qualifies for a £100,000 handicap race at York fourth Friday in August.

Big Leader’s trainer, Geoff Oldroyd, operates from his yard located in Yapham Mill, near Pocklington and has his string in good form at present.

Air Force One was successful at York and Project Geofin won at Pontefract earlier in the week.

Yorkshire based trainers landed seven out the eight races on the Thirsk card…
