NEW YOGA CLASS &
YOGA THERAPY COURSE FOR STRESS, ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

Yoga class

Starting on Tuesday 13th September between 1.30-2.30pm at Heworth (without) community centre a new yoga class is starting. Aimed for people who want to take time out before the school run or who simply want to unwind in the middle of the day.
This class was inspired from a yoga therapy student who wanted a class where she could have the option of using a chair throughout the practice or in meditation. The class will also cater for those wanting to move more dynamically who do not need the support of props.

This adaptive class will be based on a vinyasa flow integrating yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and dhyana (meditation) while also introducing the 2 other limbs Yamas and Niyamas (ethical guidelines to help on life’s journey) at the beginning of the class.

To support those who are on low social income concessions will be available.

If you cannot make the daytime class, I offer 2 evening practices around the corner at The Burnholme Centre, Tang Hall Explore Library. Rest and Restore is between 6-7pm and Strength and Stability between 7.15-8.15pm on a Monday evening.

Yoga Therapy

This comprehensive 8-week course for stress, anxiety and depression (designed by The Minded Institute) will be running again from Wednesday 5th October until 23rd November between 6.30-8.30pm. This course takes an educative approach to give you the tools to support your mental and emotional wellbeing using a combination of mindfulness meditation and yoga techniques. Support throughout the course is given by Kathy who is not only a yoga therapist but also a qualified Occupational Therapist who has previously worked in mental health. Places are limited to only 8 in the group.

For further details go to: 8 Week Course — One Mindful Yoga

Testimonial from student on previous course:

“I completed the 8-week yoga therapy course with Kathy from One Mindful Yoga. I’ve suffered from depression and anxiety in the past and wanted to explore different ways of developing healthy coping mechanisms.
The course was brilliant and Kathy was an excellent teacher.
I enjoyed learning more from Kathy about the science behind why the breathing and yoga exercises were so beneficial.
Kathy’s guided practises were all really well led and her adjustments to my poses really helped me for the first time get more out of individual poses and helped me start to get the technique right.
The course has led me to find a new interest and I have loved how balanced and calm yoga and breathing exercises make me feel. I now try to incorporate yoga and breath work into my daily life. It always makes me feel so relaxed. I miss attending a weekly guided practice and hope to do more with Kathy in the future. The class was always so welcoming and like oasis of calm in otherwise busy life. I can’t recommend it enough! Emma”

Great to be back teaching general yoga classes again! The last time I taught a general class and not yoga therapy was when I was pregnant with my second son. He was now helping me set up the class with his brother!
Both classes are full, however if interested a new term will start in July please get in touch via my website www.onemindfulyoga.co.uk or email katherine@onemindfulyoga.co.uk

I have recently had an injury leaving me with a hematoma on my leg and hobbling around on crutches (fully recovered now!) When I told the consultant that I teach yoga, he responded ‘well you won’t be teaching that for a while’.

He was so wrong!

My teacher says that, ‘if you can breathe you can do yoga!’. I so agree! This got me thinking about what yoga means. Some like practising the 8 limbs of yoga and others like practising just asana (physical postures).

To cater for all I will be delivering two classes: a gentle flow class, and a stronger physical practice for the second class.

In the first class I will emphasise pranayama (breath work) and Dhyana (meditation) interwoven with a mindful flow. The Yamas and Niyamas (how we treat ourselves and the world around us) will be what we dedicate the practice to.

The second class, for those wanting a stronger asana practice I will focus on a vinyasa flow, which will be based on moving the body through surya namaskar (sun salutations) standing, seated and inversion poses. There will be an emphasis on alignment, building strength and increasing flexibility.

To book, email katherine@onemindfulyoga.co.uk Where I will ask for you to fill in a health form and once that is received, I will send payment details which will then reserve your spot.

All is needed is a yoga mat and blanket. Other equipment will be provided, if need be. There is also lots of space for car parking outside the venue.

Living with PTSD my client says she rarely feels grounded. This is something we work on during our yoga therapy sessions. This week she came to the session with a beautiful drawing of a tree and her feet, both symbolising what it means to her to feel grounded.

The last time I was training with The Minded Institute I was 35 weeks pregnant with my first child. Some years later with two boys in tow I finish my yoga therapy for child and adolescent mental health training. A new chapter lies ahead!

Two of my case studies were referred from the Social Prescribing Scheme in York. The outcome measures for both were great but one lady in particular really turned her life around after 5 weeks of Yoga Therapy. This is exactly what Heather Mason is talking about.

As I slowly return back to work from maternity leave I mentioned in class about the work going on down in London to integrate yoga into the NHS. This is a great resource for evidence based practice https://www.facebook.com/Yoga4NHS-1683386525269475/

Sitting on my mantelpiece a reminder to slow down and try to find balance in life.
Before having my little boy you would find me working for the NHS, teaching yoga classes and studying yoga therapy. Life was always so busy, feeling like all I did was work and study. And now life is busy in a different way.
I want to enjoy making a life with my family and attempt to slow down. So you will no longer find me teaching One Mindful Classes at Tang Hall, instead my students have been handed over to . Instead I will be teaching just one intermediate vinyasa flow class
on a weekly basis.
🙏
It's not been easy to let my students go after years of building a small business after Katy handed her students to me but it's now time for a new adventure to begin for both Marci and me!

The treasure chest we hoped to open in the future when we silently prayed to fall pregnant again. Fortunately we did. But it still doesn't take the pain away when you hear the words 'sorry there's no heart beat'.
This week, from 9th-15th October is 🌈Baby Loss Awareness Week🌈
The support we had was so limited after having a silent miscarriage but I thank my lucky stars I had the love of family and friends to get through it and even though I didn't enjoy it at the time, due to going deep within the practices I was learning to become a yoga therapist.
When we were fortunate to fall pregnant again I spent a lot of time reflecting, which left me terrified in the first trimester but also to all the other women, men, sisters, brothers, parents, nieces and nephews who also experience a loss. It taught me how much more support should be given psychologically, emotionally and physically to all those affected.
My yoga therapy career hasn't yet taken off as I am fortunate enough to have an 8 week little boy and be a mummy, at last. However, I have a feeling my experience of losing our first baby may guide me down the path to help all those who need that little bit of nurture in a time when life has come crashing down.
