Midwife Continuity of Carer: What’s the Impact?
A new national study of over 922,000 women in England highlights the effect of being supported by the same midwifery team throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period.
Key insights from the largest study of its kind
23% of women were placed on the Midwife Continuity of Carer (MCoC) pathway
Women on the MCoC pathway were significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding
No overall difference was observed in stillbirth rates compared to standard care
However, Black women on the MCoC pathway had significantly lower stillbirth rates than their counterparts
Women with no antenatal appointment by 24 weeks had notably higher stillbirth rates
These findings strengthen the case for prioritising MCoC in areas with higher deprivation and in ethnically diverse communities—especially as part of the NHS Core20PLUS5 initiative to reduce health inequalities.
