Midwife Continuity of Carer: What’s the Impact?

A new national study of over 922,000 women in England highlights the effect of being supported by the same midwifery team throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period.

Key insights from the largest study of its kind

23% of women were placed on the Midwife Continuity of Carer (MCoC) pathway
Women on the MCoC pathway were significantly more likely to initiate breastfeeding
No overall difference was observed in stillbirth rates compared to standard care
However, Black women on the MCoC pathway had significantly lower stillbirth rates than their counterparts

Women with no antenatal appointment by 24 weeks had notably higher stillbirth rates

These findings strengthen the case for prioritising MCoC in areas with higher deprivation and in ethnically diverse communities—especially as part of the NHS Core20PLUS5 initiative to reduce health inequalities.

Yes!

Now over to you Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton. It is time for Australian women to have sex-based rights!

Angry mobs gathered in public and displayed banners calling for violence and the murder of dissenting women.
We’d like to know why you aren’t investigating this and making arrests.

This is not ‘just’ criminal damage to statues.

And why are you claiming these banners are ‘historical’ when women saw them? Or don’t our testimonies count? Your officers were there.

(Taps fingers, waiting patiently for a strong statement of condemnation of the mob’s banners from Sirs Mark Rowley and Sadiq Khan who apparently ‘care’ about MVAWG).

My thoughts on today's Woman's Hour, and all the other conversations that are happening right now in which the feelings of men are being centred and the rights and very identity of women are being dismissed as so very unkind and hurtful.

No paywall, currently...

New post in which I wonder why there is so much upset over a judgement that prioritises women's lives and rights over men's feelings.

Urgent Reality Check 🚨

Sister Circle’s latest campaign sheds light on some hard-to-believe truths about maternal health in the UK. Despite being in 2024, our maternal death rates are the highest they’ve been in two decades.

Black women are four times more likely to die in childbirth than white women and those in deprived areas face twice the risk.

This campaign is a stark reminder that these shocking statistics are a reality for many women across the UK. We need to confront these truths head-on and advocate for better funding and support for women’s health.

Let’s raise our voices.

The time for change is now. We cannot allow these figures to be the norm. 💔

Slate grey nevus, also known as blue-grey spots or congenital dermal melanocytosis, are a type of birthmark that are typically flat and blue-grey, or sometimes purple, in colour.

They are most common on babies with Black and Brown skin and are generally found on the sacrum and buttocks, but can also be observed on arms and legs.

Slate grey nevus are NOT bruises. They are simply the result of pigment cells, or melanocytes, not reaching the surface of the skin.⁣ They do not hurt and generally require no treatment; they often fade by the age of 4.

If you identify a slate grey nevus when doing a baby examination, or NIPE, it is important to document it. This is to avoid it later being mistaken for a bruise.

Finally - you may have heard these birthmarks called ‘Mongolian blue spots’. This is derogatory, racially insensitive terminology and should NOT be used. If you hear it used in practice, please take the time to correct it. We can all play our part in decolonising language and midwifery education!
