ππ WINTER FOOT CARE ADVICE ππ
The colder weather is now here, meaning our feet will be hidden away in socks and boots for the next few months.
It's easy to forget about our feet at this time of year, but intensive foot care during the colder weather is crucial for maintaining healthy and beautiful feet. It's even more important to take care of your feet in winter than in summer, because changing from sandals and flip flops to tighter shoes and boots is actually quite traumatic for your feet !
There`s nothing too complicated about winter foot care β just make enough time for a little bit of pampering:
π£ Treat yourself to a regular pedicure once every couple of months. A foot health practitioner is trained to identify any potential problems (athletes foot, fungal nail or skin infections, thickened nails, corns and callus) and can offer advice and products to help.
π£ Once a week, file your feet using a good quality foot file, and always on dry skin. Never file wet skin as this can mask the area to be treated, and leaves skin rubbery meaning the file won't work as well, and you may remove too much skin leaving the area tender!
π£ Treat feet to a weekly foot soak. This is lovely at the end of a stressful day! Add a cup of Epsom Salts to a bowl of warm water, and relax for 15 minutes. This will help to soothe feet, keep skin and nails healthy, as well as containing healing properties for skin. For extra benefit, treat feet to an exfoliating scrub while soaking.
π£ Moisturise feet daily, using a hydrating foot cream containing 10% urea. This leaves your feet soft and nourished, and helps to maintain the health and elasticity of the skin, preventing dry/hard skin and the risk of callus forming.
π£ Take a nail polish break. Our feet are not on display as much in the colder months, so go polish-free to allow nails to restore to their natural state. Using a nail and cuticle oil will also help to keep nails hydrated and healthy.
π£ You may suffer with cold feet, or even chilblains in the winter. To ease symptoms, wear socks made of natural fabrics such as bamboo, merino wool, lambswool or even cashmere (a great Christmas gift idea!).
π£ Choose the correct type of footwear. Shoes or boots shouldn't be flat, but should have a sturdy sole with a slight wedge heel and ideally a padded insole too. This will provide good support to the feet and help prevent the build up of hard skin/callus.
By caring for feet all year round, this can help prevent calluses, corns and other skin issues such as athlete's foot, fungal nails etc.
If feet become painful, then this is happening for a reason and a warning your feet are not happy. Always check that footwear is not too tight, and for signs of wear, seams etc which could be causing discomfort. If pain persists, please seek professional help from a foot health practitioner, podiatrist or GP.
