Fulford Community Orchard today collecting fruit that is ready for Fulford show on bank holiday Monday. This bunch of what looks like oversized grapes are actually plums! Do come and see us at Fulford show. There will be a selection of apples to test and some apple juicing 🍎🍎

Late afternoon sunlight in the orchard after the Sunday afternoon work session. Scything nettles and picking some plums. Also preparation work for a sculpture......

Some of the plums are ripe. Mostly one called Czar an early plum. The picture on the left shows them before and the picture on the right shows a ripe blue plum with blue bloom. The test for ripeness is they also give very slightly when gently pressed and come off easily. Some on the ground are also good. If you want to pick some for your own use please do it's a community orchard. And be careful because wasps also know when they are ripe too😊. Many are out of reach but please don't pull the branches or shake them as they are easily damaged.

Some photos from Fulford Community Orchard today. Gatekeeper butterfly (I believe) on Ragwort. The Ragwort also had Cinnabar moth caterpillars😊. The third picture is the remains of a wasps nest that had been dug up. But by what? Any thoughts welcome.

The orchard medlar was the last to blossom back in May and already quickly turning into little fruits!

We would just like to thank St Nicks for their continued support and help in managing our lovely little orchard. They run sessions every month for people to come and volunteer (hint hint!), as well as corporate days for businesses to join in. The most recent corporate day saw the orchard having an early mow to try and give the wildflowers a bit of a head start against the more vigorous grasses. If you would like to get involved with the orchard, feel free to drop in to one of the Sunday volunteer sessions or check out the St Nicks website for volunteering inspiration.

For those of you who have never been before, we are within the grounds of the Designer Outlet (bottom right of the picture below). Parking is within the designer outlet car park and the orchard is accessed through a small gate. There is a zebra crossing but be careful, drivers don't tend to see it and can go quite fast.

Our next session at Fulford Community Orchard is on Sunday 10th September between 1:30pm and 4pm. Come and help us to scythe areas of the meadow which were left in summer and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of this lovely oasis.

All the cuttings have been raked! Not all the meadow areas were cut, we left any clumps of flowering plants and some long grass for insects, amphibians and small mammals to hide in. Massive thanks to Curtis and family for coming to help, very much appreciated 😍
