Acupuncture and dry needling.

Are you looking for acupuncture in York delivered by a health care professional? Then look no further!

Jonathan Brack, our owner, is an experienced Chiropractor with a special interest in acupuncture. With his twenty years of experience as a chiropractor, and comprehensive knowledge of mechanical complaints, Jonathan is very well informed to give you quality advice on what treatment option is best for you and your complaint.

Jonathan runs 2 clinics a week dedicated to administering acupuncture in York at Acomb Chiropractic Clinic.

Traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture is based around meridians, these are pathways mapped out in the body, which carry the body’s energy or life force (Qi – pronounced Chi). Needles are placed along these meridians in acupoints, which aims to restore the body’s Qi.

With westernised medical acupuncture, however, you will inevitably find most of the needles around the site of the patient’s complaint or site of pain, rather than following meridians (not that these are ignored entirely). Location and placement of the needles is still important, but this placement is also informed by musculoskeletal anatomy rather than just traditional Chinese meridians.

Dry Needling is a method of acupuncture where the needles are inserted into muscles to treat pain and tension.

Jonathan uses a mixture of all three of the above philosophies/techniques.

‘I really enjoy this particular method of treatment: For the right patient, the pain relief from using needling can be fantastic. It’s important to carefully assess patients for suitability, as needling is particularly effective in certain circumstances; such as chronic pain or arthritic pains. If you’re not sure if needling is suitable for your problem, then give me a call and I’d be happy to have a free chat to learn about you and your complaint, and discuss whether this is an appropriate option for you.’ -Jonathan

Dry needling and medical acupuncture at Acomb Chiropractic Clinic is £65 per 30 minute session. Your initial session is 60 minutes long to incorporate an assessment of your complaint (also £65).

Guess what we’ve been doing?

Yes, Christmas has arrived at the clinic and Christmas time always brings a few comedy Christmas injuries!!!

-the tree fell on me.
-The turkey was just a bit too heavy and the oven was just a bit too low.
-Two hours building Lego on the floor broke me.
-too much partaking of the port after dinner led to a trip over the dog.
-And for goodness sake; don’t be tempted to try the kids roller skates!

If any of these apply to you over the Christmas period then don’t worry, you’re not the first and you’re not alone.

Nerve pain, trapped nerves, pinched nerves, sciatica, disc bulges and herniations.

Nerve pain can be one of the most unpleasant symptoms that we see in our clinic. It can often be severe, constant and quite debilitating.

The nerves exiting the spine from the neck run down the arms, and the nerves from the spine in the lower back run down the legs. If a nerve is trapped or compromised, it results in a blockage of the messages between the brain and the nerve destination/origin.

Nerve compression or impingement can result in other symptoms as well as pain, such as sensation changes including numbness and/or pins and needles. Weakness can also result from a nerve compression.

Nerve complaints that we see, are usually those originating from an impingement of a spinal nerve root as it exits the spine.
There are a variety of causes of nerve impingements of this type, but a spinal disc herniation or disc bulge is a well-known one: A disc bulge in the right position can occupy the intervertebral foramina (IVF), which is the hole that the spinal nerves use to exit the spine. The passing nerve can be irritated or compressed by the space occupying disc bulge. (Picture 2)

There are a variety of things that we as chiropractors can do to aid the recovery of patients suffering from a trapped nerve.

Treatment techniques may include manipulations and stretches to the spine, one such technique is flexion distraction for the lower back (picture 3).
This technique flexes and tractions the lower back spine in a gentle, repetitive, and pumping motion. This movement opens the IVFs, which is where the spinal nerves are often impinged. In theory stretching the spinal disc in this manner can also help reduce disc bulges/herniations. We use our hands to contact the spine to achieve these forces at the desired level. For a neck disc/nerve complaint we do a similar movement on the neck using our hands.

Should we think you need an MRI to assess the nerve impingement and the spine, we can refer you for this.

Some severe nerve impingements can require surgery.

We get certain questions regularly in daily clinical life.

We thought we could answer some of the common ones here and hopefully help with some of your queries.

Pain!😖

As you can imagine this is a huge topic, so today we will have a brief delve into spinal pain, although chiropractors treat many mechanical ailments in many parts of the body.

What is causing my pain?

The spine and surrounding anatomy is complex, and spinal pain can be caused by various structures in the back, including joints, muscles, nerves and discs, or a combination of the aforementioned.

There are many factors to consider, from damage to these structures, to external impacts like poor posture or repetitive strain, all the way to psychosocial influences such as anxiety and stress.

Very rarely will your pain be caused by a single influence, severe pain due to a joint issue in the spine can also trigger fear and worry, which in turn can increase the pain symptoms as the sufferer is often left feeling ‘out of control’, and worrying for the future.

What can you do for me?

After an appropriate history and examination, we will give you a diagnosis explaining what we think the problem is, and a prognosis explaining how well we expect you to do, and how long we expect it to take. Then we create you a treatment plan to address those underlying causes.

Will it help?

No two patients are the same, pain and progress can be varied depending on the diagnosis, severity of damage, and chronicity (how long the problem has been there).

As we guide our patients through their treatment plan, and pain reduces, we can see their confidence grow, and their movement and flexibility improve.

If we think you need further investigations, such as an MRI scan or x-ray we can refer you for these.

Ultimately our aim is to listen to you, and understand how we can help you with your pain.

So as you can see, I am the guinea pig volunteer again (any excuse for a treatment!) 😂😂

Today Henry is demonstrating a neck (cervical spine) adjustment/manipulation. This is of the cracky variety!

Although a powerful effective treatment tool, the crack is not always necessary, depending on the problem and of course the patient.

Some patients just don’t like the crack! Whether it’s anxiety or just a sincere dislike of it. But there are always other options and if you prefer not to have a certain technique, we will endeavour to find what works for you physically and emotionally.

Bad neck? bad back? Just broken? It’s what we do! Get in touch, or visit our website for more information.
