Why are mirrors such a useful tool in my baby massage classes? πͺπ
π Visual stimulation β Mirrors reflect light and movement, which are naturally attention-grabbing for your baby whilst their vision is still developing.
πΆ Social interest β Babies are drawn to faces. In a mirror, they see what looks like another baby looking back at them, which is super exciting and engaging for your little one!
π§ Cause and effect β At around 4β6 months, babies begin to notice that the βother babyβ in the mirror moves when they move. This helps them learn about cause and effect and builds their curiosity!
πͺ Self-awareness development β In their first year, your baby won't realise the reflection is themselves and usually thinks itβs another baby to interact with. At around 18β24 months, many children pass the βmirror testβ (touching their own face when they see a mark on it in the mirror) and begin to understand that the reflection is in fact...them!
π Fun and comfort β Mirrors can feel like a playful companion for your baby. Babies will often smile, laugh, or babble at their reflection, making mirror time not only fun but a wonderful boost for their social development too!
So, if you're giving your little one a back massage, some tummy time or just looking for a new play activity to use today, why not add in a mirror too! π

Iβm Laura and I run Mini Munchkins. I have two children - Izzy who has just turned 13 and Rory who has just turned 1. I first discovered baby massage when Izzy was born. She arrived 11 weeks prematurely by emergency c-section, which resulted in her needing to spend over two months in the Special Care Baby Unit in York Hospital. This was such a hard time for us and not the start in life I ever imagined for my tiny baby. Once Izzy came home we were finally able to really bond and my health visitor suggested we did baby massage together. She told me all about the benefits we would both receive from the classes and the extra benefits premature babies get from being massaged. The classes sounded wonderful so I signed up straight away and never looked back! I absolutely loved the classes and the special one to one time it gave Izzy and I.
Fast forward 11 years and I had my son, Rory. Rory, thankfully, was born closer to his due date and arrived 4 weeks early, meaning we were home from hospital within three days. I knew as soon as he was born that I wanted to attend baby massage classes again as I remembered how much I enjoyed them with Izzy. I spent a long time looking into all the different classes around my area, chose one and off we went. I massaged Rory every day at home and fell more in love with baby massage each time we did it. I could see how much Rory enjoyed it too and it was our special time together each day which I really looked forward to.
One day, whilst giving Rory his daily massage (itβs alright for some!), it suddenly clicked and I thought βI want to do this for my job!β, and for the next couple of evenings all I did was spend them researching how I could qualify to become an instructor. Within a few weeks I had booked myself onto an instructor course and ordered my massage demonstration doll. I completed my course and the day I received my certificate was the day Mini Munchkins was born and my dream became a reality!
I absolutely love running my Mini Munchkin massage classes and get so much joy from sharing my love and passion for baby massage with other mummies and daddies.
I look forward to hopefully meeting you and your baby in the near future, and in the meantime if you have any questions at all about my courses just get in touch.
