The York Neonatal Unit is pleased to announce that renovation work on the ward will begin next week.

During this time, the unit will be temporarily relocated within the hospital. For the next few months, we will be based on Ward 12, as the SCBU unit will be out of use while the work is carried out.

We would like to reassure all parents that this temporary move will not affect the care their babies receive. The refurbishment will bring significant improvements and greatly enhance the experience for families.

The new ward will offer larger bed spaces, allowing parents to stay overnight with their baby. There will also be a dedicated counselling room, new facilities including reclining chairs, and improved parent accommodation such as two double bedsits. In addition, the unit will feature an accessible lounge and kitchen area, along with new accessible shower and toilet facilities.

We are very excited about these improvements and look forward to welcoming families into the new ward.

We recently bid farewell to the incredible Gwynn Bissell, who retired after 44 remarkable years of dedicated service to the NHS.

Gwynn has been a pillar in neonatal care, working across various units in the UK, and has also contributed to the education of new nurses and lecturing.

Her presence over the past few years at York NNU has been fab, and she will be greatly missed! Best wishes for a wonderful retirement, Gwynn! We'll see you on the bank. Love from the York NNU team ###

Your first Christmas home after the NICU doesn’t have to look like anything you imagined.
It doesn’t have to be busy, loud, or full of plans.

If all you do is stay home, hold your baby, and breathe a little easier than last year —
that is more than enough. 🤍
