What is it that you most need from life? Take a moment and really feel into that question. Maybe even travel down to your heart and answer from there, the seat of your inner wisdom.

Everyone’s answer will be different; and your answer might change at different points in your life. One thing you can be sure of, though, is that your heart will always hold the wisdom to what you need.

I don’t know what your answer is and you don’t know mine. But one thing I do know, is that if the answer comes from this deeper part of you, if it rises up from your deepest heart like a spark from the flames of your love, then you must listen.

Because it is here that we hold our deepest truths; and it is here that we will find our most important lessons.

So ask yourself again: What is it that I most need from life? Travel down to your heart, breathe deeply and listen.

Then find a way to give yourself what you need. Because it is your truest path to happiness.

A few years ago I wrote a blog post about my deep desire to find inner peace. If you are interested, you can read it here (https://innertruthpsychology.co.uk/2018/08/10/peace/). This afternoon I felt a strong urge to read it again and see where am with this issue, three years later.

The first thing that I noticed is that both not much has changed and everything has changed. For those of you thoroughly ensconced on the spiritual path, these kinds of paradoxes will be familiar to you and might just elicit a wry chuckle. For those of you less familiar with these ways of thinking, let me try to explain a bit more.

When I read that article now, I recognise that everything I wrote is still true for me. I still struggle to find inner peace. I am still regularly swept up in the wondrous storm of human emotions. I ride the highs and crash down to the lows. I am frightened, angry, beautiful and loving. I am all these things, each and every day.

The thing that has changed is that I know myself just a little more deeply. I have seen sides of myself that I had barely noticed three years ago. I feel the warmth of light in the deepest parts of my being and sometimes, just sometimes, it gives me stillness.

The bit that I wanted to share with you today, is that it is the light inside us that is our peace. We are our own peace. It is not just about being in the moment (although it is that). It is not just about letting go of resistance (although it is that too). It is not just about glimpsing our true nature (although, most of all, it is that).

Here is how it comes to me: Once upon a time you were a ball of the most radiant light. Then you came down to Earth to embody your earthly existence and, goddammit, if you didn’t just forget that you were this ball of perfection and radiance almost immediately. You started to feel the lack. Something was missing; something was wrong. You started to search. You started to desire. You started to miss.

You spent years trying to figure out what on Earth you were missing. You looked in every nook and cranny; overturned every stone. Yet you still couldn’t find it.

After a lot of searching, you sat down on the ground and started to breathe.

And, like in all good fairy tales, it was then that you found what you had been looking for all along.

And what do you know? It was exactly where you had been all of the time.

If you are reading this and thinking: Sarah, I hate these kinds of spiritual parables. It makes no freaking sense at all and you are driving me crazy!

I would say: Yes, I know. It is frustrating and confusing and makes no sense at all and yet, at the same time, you know that it is right.

Yeah, we’ve all heard this one before, right? Be in the moment, smell the roses, breathe-in, breathe-out. You try, you do it for a while, then you slip right back to thinking about the future, wondering about the past. Your mind is full of questions, images. Scenes play out in front of your mind day-in, day-out. Live in the moment? Sure. Tomorrow.

But here’s the secret of being in the moment. You don’t actually have to do anything. You are in the moment, whether you like it or not. Every breath, every thought, every feeling is of this moment. Felt, heard, seen, gone.

This can be a source of terror. Because who wants to face up the real impermanence of it all? Who wants to see that each second moves neatly and gently aside for the next?

This can be a source of joy. Because who doesn’t want to see that every second is a new gift? A point of light on an ever-changing horizon. That everything and anything is possible.

But how do I get in the moment? You might ask. How do I find my way there? I might answer: you are already in the moment, you just need to learn to see it.

Life can be a confusing smorgasbord of different options at times. Maybe you’re internet dating and there’s an array of attractive looking faces beaming from their profiles. Who do you choose? Maybe you’re getting back into education and you’re looking through the different course options and they all sound equally interesting. How do you pick the right one for you?

Sometimes choices are a little more fraught. Perhaps you’ve received a diagnosis and need to decide on a treatment option. Maybe this is even a matter of life and death.

When making choices, it’s useful to consider a range of different information. Do your research, read carefully, find out the facts. Internet dating? Read the profiles, look for red flags. Choosing a treatment option? Read the information your doctor has given you, look at the NICE guidelines, even read the research if you can. All of this head-stuff is really important. Sometimes the answer will be obvious from doing your due diligence.

But sometimes things are a little less clear. If so, why not use the heart as a second source of information here? Travel down in your mind to your heart area. Breathe deeply with your heart for a moment, and ask for help from your deepest wisdom. You can ask a specific question such as “is this right for me?”. I would also recommend asking a very general question: “What do I need to know or understand about this right now?”

Then breathe, listen carefully and see what comes up. You might just find your heart carries the wisdom that you need.

We all have things in life that we wish had turned out differently. Maybe it’s something that seems quite minor: I wish I’d got that part in the school play; I wish he’d liked me back; I wish I’d worked harder at my A-levels.

Sometimes we have really big unfulfilled wishes. Things that we desire with all our heart to be different: I wish that accident had never happened; I wish my marriage could have worked; I wish she hadn’t got ill and died.

Unfulfilled wishes are part of life and they can also cause us a lot of pain. Somewhere inside us, there’s a part of us imagining fervently that things are different. As if there’s another version of ourselves living this enchanted life where the bad thing hadn’t happened, where everything is okay.

The problem with alternative realities is that they make us compare our current circumstances to an idealised dream. A dream that could never come true. This takes up our time and our energy and it can never, ever be fulfilled.

I love the energy psychology technique Logosynthesis, which has a specific protocol to clear unfulfilled wishes. Allowing us to free ourselves from the shackles of what never was and what could never be. It is amazingly freeing when we let go of an alternative reality and allow ourselves to be here, in the present, just as it is.

If you’re interested in knowing more about this approach, contact me or check out the Logosynthesis International website. You might be surprised by how much better you feel when you let these impossible dreams go.

Imagine it’s been a long, grey winter. One morning, you wake up, open the curtains and the most glorious rays of sunshine are gleaming off the lawn. The sky is bright blue. Your heart starts to sing.

Imagine you are swimming in a warm ocean. You are surrounded by magnificently coloured fish and the sun is warm on your hair. You unexpectedly swim into a pocket of cool water and the contrast sends shivers through your entire body. You feel as though you’ve swum into an enchanted pool of magic.

Imagine you are walking your path and feeling quite alone, when suddenly someone falls into step with you. You walk together, your rhythm matching perfectly. You turn to them and smile.

When life has been tough for a while, we can forget about its unexpected delights. When we’re holding a lot of pain or sorrow, we can lose touch with the incredible beauty life shows us. A reconnection with an old friend. A gift, given freely with love. The taste of an exquisite mouthful. The sound of a heartbeat in rhythm with our own.

If you find yourself lost with nowhere to go, try opening your heart to what life might be showing you. When we lose something important to us, we always make room for something new. Keep your heart open and your eyes wide. You might be astonished by what life has in store.

It occurred to me recently that I have an inner belief that there’s a right way to do things. As if there’s a path through life that works the best for you, and any deviation from it is a mistake and should be avoided. This is an inherently stressful way to view life. It means that each decision could be right (hooray!) or wrong (boo!) and it’s imperative you know the difference between the two. Otherwise, you’re off in the wrong direction, which could be catastrophic.

But what if life’s much freer than this belief implies?

I’m reminded of taking my girls to a Maize Maze this summer. If you haven’t been before, this is a maze grown from corn and opened to the public to explore for fun and frolics over the summer months. My girls entered the maze, immediately announced they didn’t like it and demanded to leave (well that’s £32 wasted, thank you very much). Overly-discerning children aside, I was reminded of the maze when I reflected on my belief.

My belief is a little bit like entering the Maize Maze and thinking that you must find the shortest route the exit on the first try. As if at every junction you must take the correct fork, or you’re messing up the whole experience. But what if the experience is about exploring? What if taking a slightly longer or circuitous route is part of the point? No-one enters the Maize Maze to make it out in the shortest time. It’s supposed to be fun, for goodness sake.

I realised that my belief about there being a right way was not only causing me a lot of stress but was also stopping me from exploring. Sometimes going the long way around is the most interesting after all. Mistakes are made in life and they hurt. But how else do we learn and grow? How else can we discover who we want to be?

I decided to let go of my belief and I used an energy psychology technique to do so. Why not notice if you have a similar belief? You might just benefit from letting it go and enjoying life’s twists-and-turns a whole lot more.

When you’re struggling with a difficult issue, it’s very tempting to try to solve it as soon as possible. Trouble at work? Change your job. Problem in a relationship? Work out how to fix it or leave. Problem solved.

But sometimes things aren’t that straightforward. Sometimes there is no easy answer or perhaps there are several solutions, but we don’t know which way to go.

Why not try this? Give yourself some time and space to let things flow.

Underneath our desire to fix a situation, there’s a deeper intolerance of the negative emotion that it’s leading to. Maybe we cannot sit with our fear, our uncertainty, our rage. Maybe we never learned that we could just be with it, just as it is, and breathe.

If we rush to change our world to fix our feelings, we miss out on the nuance of what our emotions are telling us. I call this our emotional guidance.

Let me give you an example: You have a new boss at work and he’s awful to you. Of course you feel angry, upset and anxious. You could put in for a transfer to a new division or even apply for a new job. Problem solved, right?

But what if you sit with it for a while first. See what your feelings are communicating to you. Maybe you hear a deeper calling for freedom. Maybe a hidden part of you doesn’t want to be told what to do anymore. Hearing that communication will give you a clearer idea of what path you want to take in life.

No matter how uncomfortable it is, don’t rush to push it away. Give it some space, listen to your emotional guidance and see what comes up. Then take the path that is truly right for you.

There’s something you should know about life: it’s not always easy. Sometimes it’s extremely tough. Sometimes for long periods on end. Sometimes one thing happens, then another, and you feel like throwing your hands up to the sky and shouting “WHY?”

Sometimes this is life; and it’s so damn hard.

I’ve been feeling this recently. My marriage has ended and I’ve moved out with my children, living on my own for the first time in a while. The practical side of it, although initially a bit worrisome, is fine. But the emotional fall-out is harder to navigate.

You may be wondering why I’m telling you this. Aren’t I supposed to be offering self-help tips? Ways to make yourself feel better? Well actually I think this is the biggest self-help tip of all. Sometimes you have to go through something and get to the other side.

As someone who works with powerful energy psychology techniques, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that there’s a solution to every difficult emotion. That if we just use this approach or that one, we can let go of the pain and move on more quickly. There is some truth to this and many of these techniques are incredibly useful.

But (there’s always a but) this is also your life and you can’t just skip it. You can’t leave a marriage and not feel the pain. You have to face what happened, feel what you feel and then you can move on. Skipping ahead is not a viable option.

Here’s what I’ve learned: Your emotions arise for a reason. Sometimes that reason can be decades old and some trauma work can clear the original trigger and calm the emotion. Sometimes the trigger is right now and you need to stop, feel and listen. To do anything else is robbing you of one of your most vital tools: your emotional guidance.

Next time you are in a difficult place, stop and feel your emotions. Listen to what’s going on inside you. In that way, you will find that the right path becomes clear.

Sometimes it feels like we are searching for something and yet we never find it. Some branches of spirituality suggest that you should stop looking. Just relax, imagine how it feels to have what you want and the very thing will appear as if by magic. I think there is some truth to this position, but the reality is a little more nuanced.

Let’s imagine you are a fisherman and, somewhat unsurprisingly, you would really like to catch some fish. You could just stare out of the window hopefully and think about how delicious fish are, but that’s not likely to make those fish appear in your life. You also need to get out there on the ocean and start fishing.

Inside of you, you have many different parts, sometimes known as archetypes. One is your internal magician, who can create all sorts of wonderful things in your life. One is your internal warrior, who can you get off your butt to work hard towards your goals. Both are important in creating the life you crave.

Let’s return to the fisherman. You want to catch some fish? Yes, absolutely spend some time activating your inner magician. Imagine those delicious fish and how good it would feel to taste them. Then activate your internal warrior, get out of bed and into the boat, ready to catch those fish when the time is right.

As in so many things, balance is important. Just as yin needs yang, the masculine needs the feminine, and you need to balance your magic creative energies with your intentional action. So the next time you really want something, make sure you invoke the magic of manifestation and the power of real-life intentional action too. You might just find that you get what you desire a whole lot quicker.
