Absolutely this! Sharing to remind me to write more about this

Can we TALK about the fact that moms get overstimulated and it's mistaken for anger...

No, I'm not angry; I've heard mom 500 times since the minute I woke up, the tv is so loud, the washer is going, noises outside, there's laundry to fold, my house is a wreck, bills are due, I need gas in my car, there's crumbs on everything, dishes in the sink and I can feel it all

I'm not angry. I'm overstimulated and need a minute to myself

Motherhood is exhausting. No matter what someone always needs you Go to work; someone needs you, come home; someone needs you, go to sleep; someone needs you, shower time; someone needs you, going to the bathroom; someone needs you.

A child, a baby, an adult IM ALWAYS NEEDED.

I'm not angry. 💗 I'm overstimulated

Let me collect myself before you start to accuse me of being in a bad mood. I just need a minute

A client sent this to me after a conversation we had about the reality of parenting. I can definitely relate! It also reminded me to remind you of the importance of taking time for you and to remind you that I don't just offer pregnancy massage but also postnatal massage and 'knackered mum' massages which are suitable whatever age your children are (because let's face it, it doesn't automatically get easier as they get older) Do come and be the one getting looked after for a change x

ALL OF THIS!
It’s why I recommend all pregnant women try to join a pregnancy class (birth prep, pregnancy yoga, hypnobirthing for example) and Susan’s classes are the cream of the crop! Get informed and find your support groups.

It’s why when I became a doula I called myself York Mother Nurture. I didn’t become a doula because I loved babies (even if they are scrumptious) I became a doula because I recognised how much nurturing and support mothers desperately needed

What if we nurtured mothers?

What a flipping great question!

I was rewatching a really powerful TED talk. It’s by Diana Spaldin and titled “What if we nurtured moms”

There’s some pretty powerful stuff in it. Definitely worth a watch, I’ll share the link at the end of the post.

In it she states:
85% of mothers do not believe society takes good care of mothers. (Tbh I’m surprised it’s not a higher number 😢)

We are asking mothers to nurture when they do not feel nurtured themselves.

And asks these questions...
~ when did we stop valuing mothers?
~ how is it to feel you are not important?

Her conclusions are clear - modern motherhood isn’t working. Mothers are burning out. 🔥

But she had solutions too. Which for me really validates what I do and why I do it. I know in my heart it’s important, but to hear some research figures is really powerful.

She says...
When people recieve social support they experience less burnout 🔥

The figures say that, women who receive social support have:
~ a lower risk of a low birth rate baby
~ a lower risk of pre term labour
~ fewer hopsitalisation
~ fewer caesarean births
~ less postnatal depression

She talks of ‘huge solutions being compilations of small solutions’

I like to think I offer one of these (very) small solutions in my weekly classes. The community and connection of being in a supportive, safe space with other pregnant women / women and babies is the gold ✨Truly.
I believe that cannot be underestimated.

Oh and yes of course we do need a true revolution in how we value mothers in society, a massive culture change and paradigm shift, government to listen and make radical change.

Folks like the brilliant@pregnant_then_screwed are doing amazing work on these big changes. and I’m right there with that big time too.

Day 11 of “Fabulous Pregnancy and Birth Support Folk in York” Advent Calendar is the luminous Cathy Nicholson of Happy Homebirth

If you’re pregnant and considering a home birth or thinking of labouring at home in water before heading to hospital, Happy Homebirth pool hire offering may be of interest to you.

Cathy has been hiring pools in Yorkshire for around 14 years and you can tell she finds it an absolute privilege to support couples at such a special time in their lives.

“Having had 4 home water births myself I’m always happy to chat through questions, offer some top tips and throw some extra birthy tools your way that may be helpful (beautiful wooden birth stool gifted to me when I was a doula, is brilliant). “

She also takes care of the pools for the York Homebirth Support ‘Pool funding scheme’ that helps families who receive universal credit to access pools. Do get in touch with her or the wonderful York Hombirth support group for more information: homebirthinyork@gmail.com

Ahh a hectic weekend for me has meant I didn’t get chance to post day 9 and 10 of my “Fabulous pregnancy and birth support folk in York” advent calendar (I know, it does need a snappier title!)

But that means today you get 3 recommendations, just think of it as getting 3 yummy chocolates at once! 🤣

Day 9 is the wonder woman that is Mel from All Things Birth and Beyond. If you want someone who goes the extra mile Mel is your woman!

I’ll let her introduce herself:

“I’m a mum of two, Doula UK full-spectrum Doula, BFI accredited BFC, Holistic Sleep Coach (Dip), Advanced Birth & Beyond Practitioner (BA. Hons, UofW), Reiki Master, trauma-informed Birth Doula & Postnatal Expert and believer in YOU!
I have spent the last 2 decades of my life supporting parents as they transition into their new roles as nurturers & carers. It’s a role I am passionate about & absolutely committed to as my life’s purpose.
I help pregnant women and mothers transition through their new, and ever changing roles, so that they feel fully supported and empowered in their monumental transformation that is motherhood.”
