Driving assessment and lessons feedback:

"I would like to thank everyone at the William Merritt Centre for the help they have given me in changing my driving to hand controls only.

It was very stressful and daunting for me after 50 years on driving, a change like this to me was massive.

From the moment I contacted William Merritt I was given so much support and help, everyone I spoke to was so understanding, kind, and patient, nothing was too much trouble, they were so helpful and very approachable.

They looked at my needs and suggested alternative adaptions that were available, which was very helpful. They introduced me to an experienced instructor and after some lessons I had my final assessment and was ready to drive safely on my own.

Going through a big change like this was a good experience as I had support and encouragement during this period.
Thank you William Merritt for all your help and support"

🚘👏 At The William Merritt Centre, we love showcasing how the right adaptations can make all the difference in empowering safe and independent driving.

Here’s Mike, one of our fantastic Approved Driving Instructors and Assessor, demonstrating the Lodgesons Lollipop secondary control switching unit. This clever piece of technology allows drivers with limited mobility to operate essential vehicle controls at the touch of a button – all while keeping their focus on the road.

It’s all about safety, confidence, and independence – making driving accessible for everyone.

💡 Want to know more about how our team can help you explore the right driving adaptations? Get in touch today – we’re here to support your journey to safe independence.

Client feedback - Driving Assessment:

"Excellent service. I’m not a perfect driver, who is? But I felt at ease and I was able to drive safely during my assessment and am now driving again after a 2.5 year absence following a stroke."

World Alzheimer’s Day – 21st September

World Alzheimer's Day is a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer's disease and other dementia. Join the Alzheimer's Association as they recognise the more than 55 million people across the world who are affected by this terrible disease.

This World Alzheimer's Day marks a historic era in the fight against Alzheimer's. There are now traditionally approved treatments to slow Alzheimer's in the early stages, but there is much more work to do. Day by day, the Alzheimer's Association is making real progress for families facing the disease.

We would like to congratulate James on passing his theory test today. He won't mind us telling you that he's attempted it 29 times, but today, after working online with Jayne, one of our specialist driving instructors, he's done it!!!

James tells us that the people at the office all cheered for him!

James has benefited from the theory support project that we have been delivering for the last two years with funding through Driving Mobility, partnered with the Department for Transport, and we've worked across the country, trying to help as many people as we can.

James, you are a true example of someone who had something he wanted to achieve, and kept working until you achieved your goal. It's been an absolute pleasure working with you and we look forward to hearing from you when you pass your practical test!

Client feedback - Driving assessment:

"I was stressed in the run up to the assessment and especially on the day but Janet (WMC Approved Driving Instructor) and Sophie (WMC Occupational Therapist) were very reassuring. I wasn't sure that I'd be able to do myself justice in a vehicle completely different from my own. However it wasn't as bad as I expected. The best improvement would be an assessment in your own vehicle but I appreciate the need for dual controls and appropriate insurance."

Launching our programme to help people remain and return to work.

We are part of the NHS West Yorkshire ICB’s Growth Accelerator programme, which supports individuals with long-term physical or neurological conditions to maintain their independence and mobility—key to finding, staying in, or returning to work. Essential daily mobility equipment—such as dressing aids, wheelchairs, and scooters— plays a crucial role in helping individuals achieve these goals.

We provide FREE impartial advice and clinical assessments to support individuals living with a disability or long-term condition in maintaining their independence. Our specialist Occupational Therapists conduct assessments for mobility equipment, ensuring that any equipment you trial meets your specific needs and supports your independent mobility
